...the forebearers of mind control, right?

We do NOT have a national system now where a person is pulled over and can be checked for warrants from state, local or FBI or CIA or Department of Homeland security.

We do not have a national system where a prospective employee can walk in and hand over a card replete with all pertinent info; SS, nationality, immigration status and right on to criminal background.

I'd want all my medical info and address and everything about me imbeded so I could swipe a card instead of filling out one more form at a doctors or to get a passport and then get umpteen forms telling me how the person I just gave all that info to is not going to give it to anyone else even though everyone else probably already has it.

Why the objections?

...it's fine. I'm not riled and mean no offense.

Do you have objections, though, and why?

Then, we can talk about booze!

No, I don't have objections. I carry a drivers license and a social security card, and an array of credit cards (that should have been burned and buried a long time ago) - I have to wear two badges at work, along with key-cards.

A lot of places ask for two forms of ID to make transactions.

An ID card from the Government isn't going to bother me in the least, unless it remote detonates.

And I like Belgian Beer.

We all carry these things. And we have birth certificates to get the whole process started. What will be gained by issuing a National ID card? It seems to me to be just one more bureaucratic, government-expanding tax waste to me, unless they truly implement it as a replacement for all the other crap we have to carry. I have a driver's license with nice fancy holograms embedded in it, my address, etc. Why don't they just add my SSN, my citizenship, and my place of birth, and I can get rid of all the other crap?

I like Hoegarrden (sp?) and Stella Artois.

I'm also partial to Mexican beer - Dos Equis and Tecate, especially.

Fabulous idea! I'd like ONE number to identify me, and one number only. Since our Social Security numbers are all unique, that could be the number. Use it for your credit cards, your driver's license, your bank account - hell, even your phone number. Then you have a PIN/password to protect it.

Actually, I don't think social security numbers are very good idea. There's only billion possible numbers - and since the first three numbers mean something (birth location, I think), that leaves only a millon people for each zone.

Plus it's too easy to memorize 9 numbers.

I think that in the modern computer age, each person should be assigned a 128 bit GUID (globally unique identifier) value like computer programs, COM elements and the like. It's a 128 bit number, guaranteed to be unique, and you will never run out of those numbers ever.

I just assigned one to myself: My GUID is: {9D342E71-DBB8-48C8-A2C4-48824AC880A2}

Because we already HAVE one - an SSN - and it's not supposed to be one.

Because we technically USE one - a driver's license - but not everyone HAS one, they can be "revoked" (because they're not meant to be ID's) and they have to be renewed. Elderly folks tend to not have them, and from state to state, data related to them aren't easily transmittable.

Because we have a damned lot of non-interchangeable ID's now, which makes fraud and security exceedingly difficult. I've never had a birth certificate in my lifetime - I have the next best thing, a notarized document from the Dept of whatever from the state of New Jersey - that says all about my birth - but I don't have one and never have had one.

As far as medical information goes - thank God I'm not allergic to anything, or have any serious medical conditions. In the event of an emergency, I do hope there's someone on hand to tell the doctors I can't take aspirin, however. Why can't they at least code stuff like that onto my medical card? Why do I have to fill out pages of PAPER FORMS every friggin' time I go to a doctor, dentist, specialist, hospital, surgeon, etc.? I already have to fill out forms once a year at my OWN doctor, and I've been seeing him for ten years.

Don't we already have a national ID? It's used to identify us in every step in our life, it used to be from the age of 5 to the grave, but now it's from cradle to grave. They can see how much money you've made, where you've applied for work, where you've travelled too, what kind of credit you have... etc..

SSN is being used as a National ID now... the new one will just be more secure.

They'd have to shoot me with a tranquilizer and tag me like a lion.
I'm not doing anything to anyone and it's no ones business what I'M doing.I like my freedom more then I like coffee or ice cream.

If you are a criminal, that would call for some sort of supervision. Illegals would get tagged, deported and lose any chance they ever had to come here legally.

Stop being so nice and we won't NEED a national ID.
