Barack Obama is the President Elect of the United States. Congrats to him and all who supported him.

More importantly this should mean the end to Racism or at least the complaint that Racism exist in the United States. If a Black man can ascend to the highest office in the land than all who follow should be able to do the same. Correct?

No longer will there be a need for affirmative action. By the standards of the democrats and the majority of African Americans anyone can be whatever they want in life with hard work and perseverance. Correct?

I would very interested in your take on this topic... I would ask that snide remarks be left out but this is SOMD and of course that would be impossible!!

But is he truly considered African American due to the fact that he is mothered and raised by a white woman? I'd love to think that racism would be over and actually understand your question but you can bet that some Sharpton/Jackson type will find ways to say that the Presidency will be marred by the white man. I pray for our country and our way of life that BO can do the job. I personally did not vote for him as I have yet to see a democratic president do much for my way of life in my lifetime. No jabs, no stabs and no ill words.

This election was never about race for me. Obama was not my pick but it had nothing to do with him being half black. I believe all people are created equal it is what they choose to do with themselves that determines their limitations in this life time. Even the poorest of people can rise above to make something of their lives. I believe that hard work & perseverance should be the determining factor not race.

Not all the racists lost tonight....just look at the Black Panthers who tried to intimidate white voters.

Racism is still alive on both sides of the fence. Hopefully this will help lesson it.

For one thing, after the honeymoon is over, pretty much every lampoon, satire, or criticism of Obama will be regarded as gross racism. They were declaring Bush the village idiot and airing shows ridiculing him before he even took office, but the moment such stuff is brought against Obama, it will be soundly brayed about as racist.

Oddly enough, much crticism of Hillary was called sexist. Much WORSE stuff was piled on Sarah Palin, but it was *never* sexist. I just didn't get how bringing attention to Hillary's hairstyle, laugh or cankles was sexist, but calling Sarah a bimbo and Caribou Barbie wasn't.

Then there's the other side - there's going to arise this sense of entitlement that arises because we now have a black man as President. And I don't care if THAT is called racist, because it WILL happen. I know blacks don't regard themselves as "racists". Fine. There will be *bigotry* and *prejudice* and it will fall along the lines of skin color.

i disagree with the bolded part. I doubt every joke will be considered racist. the ones based on race, yes, they will be but most, not so much.

now that doesn't mean i think racism will stop, it will probably be invigorated among the minority that already were.

When you have blacks being insulted by words like "niggardly" (which even etymologically has no connection to the other word) or phrases like "black hole" - there's very little doubt in my mind that people won't construe criticism of him, or ridicule as anything but racist.

Will EVERYONE feel that way? No. But it will be brought up. I'm sure people thought ridicule of George Bush was unpatriotic. I guarantee you, people, ESPECIALLY Democrats who have shown themselves repeatedly to have a very thin skin regarding ridicule - WILL bring it out.

Caricatures in political cartoons have always been a mainstay of politics. I think in this Presidency the caricature cartoon writers better look for another line of work, because any political caricature cartoon of Obama will be de-facto racist.

That's about all we can get out of this election.

Plenty of white racists are pissed, while black racists most definitely won. This election shows that white racism is much lower than in years past, but that's about it.

I think if you start messing around with people's First Amendment's rights overall, there will be a backlash.

And if Obama wants to hang those drapes in the White House, then he would be wise to take a stand against it. I think once he is in that position, the power alone will be enough to keep him wanting more and will do whatever the people tell him to keep the job.

I still firmly believe that this election wasn't so much about race (although it played a part most definitely) but it was about everyone being tired of Republican reign.

Elections are historically cyclical - 2 terms Democrat, 2 terms Republican - unless of course you consider Maryland which only had 1 term Republican which is a real shame. But, it could be the bellwether for Obama's term - the Democrats relented and elected Ehrlich maybe because they "wanted change" but Ehrlich didn't bring it so they put their own back in.
