Jehovah's Witness mother of twins refuses blood transfusion then dies.

Ubi bene ibi patria
"A devout Jehovah's Witness died just hours after giving birth to twins - as her strict faith barred her from receiving a life-saving blood transfusion.

Despite desperate pleas from doctors, Emma Gough, 22, and her family, including her husband of nearly two years Anthony, 24, resolutely refused treatment.

The young mother had time to cradle her newborn twins, a boy and a girl, before falling unconscious from heavy blood loss."

How tragic. I am so sorry that this young girl gave up her life after giving life. I won't pretend I understand all there is to know about the Jehovah's Witnesses and their faith but that is not how I have ever heard that passage interpreted and I have heard theologians debate this issue before because this is not the first time treatment has been withheld due to faith and the isssue of blood transfusion. I wish I remembered specifics. Now a wife, mother and daughter are gone. So very sad.

At least it was her and not the twins who needed intervention. You wanna die? fine with me.... Feel sorry for those babies though, left alone with the nutty guy who was willing to let his wife die without a fight.

Even more sad is the fact that this happens very often because of their MIS-INTERPRETATION of what the Bible says! Leviticus 17 v 11 says not to EAT blood. It doesn't speak against transfusions! Our life is in our blood so it was considered sacred back then. They also don't celebrate Christmas because of another mis-conception from Jeremiah 10 v 3-5 but that's off topic. This, again, is why it is imperative that people read and understand the Bible in the context that it was written. All types of bad things can happen when they don't.

I think people should be able to decide whether they want certain medical treatments or not, for whatever reason. If you can't be in charge of your own body, what the hell CAN you be in charge of?

I don't think anyone has any call to criticize this woman for her decision.

This country was founded on religious freedom.

She had every right to refuse something that was against her faith.

She died, and it was her faith and her familys faith that will see them through.

Every religion has their differences and some quirky beliefs, but the beliefs are theirs to practice and embrace.

Many other people die every day because they refuse medical treatment..it is called a Living Will...and it is their choice...and a choice to be respected, no matter how much we think it is wrong.

May she rest in peace and her family be comforted by their faith and their church community.

Now...about those snake worshipers....you know..the ones who dance around with rattlesnakes...????

Yep. Every right. And now her twins get to live without a mother. Yep. Good choice. :yay:

It was her choice...and her kids will understand because they will be raised by he JW community.

Ever been to their center in NYC? Really impressive. A dear friend of mine, living in Sydney, Az is a JW and we have had some pretty intense and deep discussions about their beliefs.

I dont agree with them, but it is their choice and protected by the constitution...Freedom of Religion.

Kids will be fine..the JW community is very close and very tight. We could learn a thing or two from them.

Pray for the family and for the soul of the mom.....

They would do that for you.

That and it is her religious belief too.

I agree with this. I have known others that refuse certain medical intervention because it is against their faith. They don't want the stain on their soul when the pass on.

Although many of you may not agrees with her choice, this is America, and as Americans we fight to the death to protect her right to make it.

It should be noted, that those that are JW are allowed to take a synthetic plasma and shots to boost their own blood production. It must have either not been an option or not made an option in this lady's case.

Religion is a good thing. However any religious fanatic is a nut ,no matter what their religion is.
:yeahthat: Especially those nuts that say "my flavor is better than your flavor so you're going to burn in hell."

Yes, this woman has the right to refuse treatment, and that is a right we should never infringe on. However, it is appropriate for us to discuss this and express our distaste. People who might consider becoming a JW should be aware of stories like this so that they can make informed decisions.

Exactly. What kind of religion brain washes its followers to refuse a simple medical treatment?

I won't ever understand what made her make that choice. It's her choice to make, but I think it was a stupid one. It's not like she needed a kidney or liver transplant. It's just a blood transfusion. Now those babies have to grow up without their mom. Sure, I guess the community will raise them :blahblah: :blahblah:, but they still don't have their mom.
