I suggest getting one of the balcony rooms that faces duval st. at the La Concha Crown Plaza. We (hubby and I) had a blast! The rooms are small but you wont be in there much. La Concha the tallest building in old town and is supposed to be haunted. The key west ghost tour begins nightly in the lobby. There's a rooftop bar with amazing views, a starbucks and a really nice restaurant.
You wont need your car if you stay in old town. Everything is so close. There are trollys, a conch train, lots of taxis and dudes willing to peddle you anywhere if you can no longer walk or crawl lol!
I liked Irish Kevins, Hogs Breath Saloon, Cowboy Bills, Two Friends Patio Bar and Green Parrot.
We have gone for the past 3 yrs. We do a few nights in Key West first then head back up to Islamorada (sportfishing capitol of the world). Its beautiful there. There's a sandbar just off shore where the party happens every weekend. Boat rentals and snorkel trips are pretty cheap. The reefs are really close so the boat ride out is short.
In the upper keys, you can explore the florida bay on one side of the island and the atlantic on the other. The sunsets are perfect almost every evening on the bay side.
If you happen to pass through Islamorada, make a stop by Robbies marina and feed the tarpon!

Really??

Seriously???

I can't imagine anyplace better than a cabin in the mountains in winter.

Especially with a rich hubby who's paying for it, and is old and will be dying soon, without dependents except for me. And lives in Howard County.

:yay:

Hey, I was just laughing at the tread in my first post-I don't know how I got dragged into being interested in the cabin in the woods of a rich hubby who is old, and dying soon, with no dependents. And lives in Howard County.

Ok, so here is the deal,
Got a friend that is turning 50 in about a year, he has always wanted to visit key west but never had the money to blow on it.

So, I and another person are going to fly down to Key West in May or so and set up a week of whatever for him. When the time comes, we will all drag our trailers down and pay his week of Key West for him.

Ive never been there, so I need Ideas. He likes to fish, drink, women, drink, off road, drink etc...
What do we do there, what are the must see places.
If we are spending that kind of cash, I want to make sure he enjoys the hell out of the top of the hill that he is hitting.
I figure a couple days left open for his choice, but other things that need reservations will need to be done in advance of him knowing they will be done.

Any Ideas or comments on some things that are "must do" while there would be appreciated.

best part of this is that it gives me 2 trips to Key west,, one to plan, one to party.

Why the Keys?

We're just talking here, right? I have, somehow, gotten the impression you don't much like gay people, liberals and are pretty much a redneck kind of guy, which is fine because I am pretty much a redneck myself. However, I am a somewhat sophisticated redneck and actually like gay people, have liberal friends and enjoy the whole people watching, socializing, human circus thing.

Assuming, correct me if I am wrong, that your friends are more or less like you and, more or less, like the same things, I do not think the Keys are going to be y'alls cup of tea, especially Key West. There are 'guy guy' things to do in San Franciso. You gonna go there, too? Get my drift?

I mean, my guy pals, the Keys would not be where we'd choose to go and not even on the short list. Vrail took me one time and I, we, had an absolute blast together but, that's us and the things she and I like to do when it's she and I.

Now, that said, the diving is OK and if you like fishing, as you mentioned, it's perhaps the best place on the planet for that. It is not a golf mecca. It is a boring place to ride motorcylces. Half the women have penis's. The weather is ab fab especially if you like ocean breezes.

Just having trouble imagining a bunch of guys on a guy trip going to the Key's.

well, hes not old (at least not in my book anymore) but as far as that dying part, Ive seen movies, if you don't get caught.......

Just saying, people accidently get locked out of their houses all the time and freeze to death.. very tragic :killingme

I dont dislike the gay people, I dislike what they do and want. Its not like Im going try to go beating on them because they are gay, I just wont condone, accept or vote for their lifestyle. I honestly think they could and should be helped.

actually Larry, the one whos birthday it will be is somewhat of a liberal, in he admits to voting for obama. I have fun with this now.

and are pretty much a redneck kind of guy,
At times I have been known to engage in activities that would cause one to think I might have just a touch of redneck left from my Carolina days.

Assuming, correct me if I am wrong, that your friends are more or less like you
Somewhat, but not politically. Im not sure how the other one I speak of leans, but I suspect from knowing his wife that there might be a shade of liberal in the bloodline somewhere. But, we all enjoy four wheeling, shooting, fishing and drinking the occasional beer

Might just be the place to go..

In some ways, since I am married and not one to step out, as would be the other married friend, and the only one that might end up with an issue is the birthday guy, I really have less of a problem with this than you might think.

Now if we are sitting at a table in a bar and drinking whatever, and there are chicks with D,,,, sitting there talking to us, Im not going to know they are really dudes, and since they are not going to be heading back to the hotel with me, or kissing on me, Im perfectly ok with this.
The real fun will be in not letting the other guy know this is a possible situation, and sitting back and watching things progress right up to the point that we finally tell him,, if we figure it out.:killingme

Then, by all means, Duval street awaits! Too bad you just missed Fantasy Fest.

The Key's are one of my favorite places I've been so far. Just not a place I'd go with the guys.

Key West is a lot of fun. It'll be HOT in May. You must coordinate a tour with Sebago. Key West Travel, Snorkeling, Sailing, Eco Tours, Weddings & Key West Web Cam

The Island Ting video looked like alot of fun.
Its amazing that those two trannies laying on the hammocks at the end of that video were able to hide their franks so well.
I have it on good authority that all the women in key west are actually men.

good thing Im bringing my own female with me when I go.

As for fishing you'll have a choice of the flats, with 'cuda, bone fish tarpon and others. Might do that one day. Then there is the bottom fishing all kinds of different species there. Then there is the offshore for bigger gamefish. Find out what is hot that time of year. A snorkling trip might be fun too.

:this:

It was may moons ago ( and a few drunken moons at that...), we chartered a 42' sailboat out of Marathon Key and sailed down to Key West. Nice to stop along the way, snorkel, sail, see the sights. I can only remember 2 things from Key West; the crowd at sunset watching for the Green Flash, and being completely faced trying to climb over a fence to get back to the marina and the boat while the cops just sat there and watched us make fools of ourselves.

It was a great trip...

I've always had a soft spot for Key West since I first went there in 1970. However...its become too touristy and expensive for my taste and I prefer the 'other' keys for longer stays. I actually worked in KW for almost three years not more than a few years back..and I stayed away from the Key West bars and hung around the 'locals' spots on Stock Island (where the shipyard is). Hog Fish is a particular favorite of mine on Stock Island.

The fishing is great but for the most part, also quite expensive to undertake. Only the 'head boats' are still relatively cheap seats.

Awesome recommendations all around. Also can't forget the classic Sloppy Joe's, even if it's just for one drink.

bcp -- I forgot one more suggestion. You HAVE to go to the Garden of Eden. Your visit to Key West will simply be incomplete otherwise.

Actually I liked touring Hemingways place. Didn't think I would but it was pretty cool.

I agree Gilligan, started going to the Keys and Key West in the early 70's it was alot more laid back then. Always make at least one trip down there but the last several times down that way have stayed farther up the keys.

BCP, don't listen to people who say all they is in Key West is kweers. I think we met one obviously gay man the whole time we were there, and he was a shopkeeper. The rest were either normal boring people or geriatric tourists.
