Key West,, anyone????

Ok, so here is the deal,
Got a friend that is turning 50 in about a year, he has always wanted to visit key west but never had the money to blow on it.

So, I and another person are going to fly down to Key West in May or so and set up a week of whatever for him. When the time comes, we will all drag our trailers down and pay his week of Key West for him.

Ive never been there, so I need Ideas. He likes to fish, drink, women, drink, off road, drink etc...
What do we do there, what are the must see places.
If we are spending that kind of cash, I want to make sure he enjoys the hell out of the top of the hill that he is hitting.
I figure a couple days left open for his choice, but other things that need reservations will need to be done in advance of him knowing they will be done.

Any Ideas or comments on some things that are "must do" while there would be appreciated.

best part of this is that it gives me 2 trips to Key west,, one to plan, one to party.

are you actually going in may?
fishing offshore can be tricky then, tends to be windy that time of year

You might want to look into renting a house in Key Colony Beach rather than dragging your trailers down. Might not be as much as you think.

Marathon is a good midway point and there's a campground there.
Key West is good for at least 2 trips, a day trip and a night trip.
Must sees: Malory Dock at sunset, Hemingway's House, Mel Fisher's Museum,
NoNamePub on Big Pine - be early, gets crowded, food is great! PeteNWayne at Sloppy Joe's

Two of us are flying down in May to set everything up. the actual party will be later in the summer

I have this thing about hotels or rental places. I know it an unreasonable phobia, but I always get this image, right as I try to get in the bed, that the night before there was some fat woman, perhaps your typical Wal-Mart shopper, getting rode hard with her most ass on the pillow that my head is about to hit...
This is why I do the camper. Has nothing to do with money.

oh, and now they got that bedbug thing going on. and to top it off Larry tells me that its homo heaven, so the fat wal-mart shopper could turn into a fat wal-mart shopper dude getting rode hard..

Time out, hoss. When you ar edown there, ask the locals how the weather is in summer. Not good.

Best time to go in your opinion?
I figured it might be hot, but tolerable. Or is it some other weather issue like, rain/wind/hurricane etc...

I've been to Key West in May and it was MISERABLE!!! It's literally too hot to do anything. Friends of mine lived there for a few years and they said the best time is Feb/early March.

The extensive research I did with the most knowledgeable people in the Keys, aka 'bar tenders,' say it can be just fine in the summer...unless the breeze dies. Which does happen. THAT is when they say it is miserable.

So, there is the practical, when you can go, and the tactical, when 'best' to go. February, my one and only trip, was a tad cooler than I like. I would think April-early June or, after hurricane season, October-November would be my next plan. Average 80's in the day, upper 70's at night.

Not really my style. Id be afraid to ask for a stir stick for my drink. :killingme

You aren't supposed to look up my suggestions! You are supposed to take them and enjoy the surprises. You never know, you might see some hot naked chicks up there, but I doubt it :dye:

BCP, don't listen to people who say all they is in Key West is kweers. I think we met one obviously gay man the whole time we were there, and he was a shopkeeper. The rest were either normal boring people or geriatric tourists.
I wouldn't quite go that far -- you must not have been paying attention or you managed to avoid Duval street. There are plenty of gay people in Key West. HOWEVER that doesn't mean it's a bad place to visit and I agree with the rest of what you said.

damn northerners can't handle a little heat

It's not all gay. It is not overtly gay. However, it is the difference between drama class and shop.

Key West, to me, is fun, eclectic and relaxed. There is a guy who pan handles on Duvall and will give you dirty jokes for a couple bucks a pop. They were the bestest, dirtiest, crassest, just vulgarly hilarious dirty jokes I ever heard and I can't wait to go back and pay him again because I forgot most of them. He got some bank out of me.

It's an interesting place for sure. I just got a little creeped when I bumped into someone standind outside a bar wearing hot pants and fishnets and it turned out to be a "guy". I like the midkeys better for diving and fishing.

Key West is a lot of fun. It'll be HOT in May. You must coordinate a tour with Sebago. Key West Travel, Snorkeling, Sailing, Eco Tours, Weddings & Key West Web Cam

Watchout for those snorkling booze cruises! Ex and I learned that the hard way. Shore always looks a lot closer than it is so that whole mentality of hurry up and finish that one so we can get another one while they are still free works out great haha. I doubt the heated pool and cigars right after we walked back to my uncle's house helped either....

Keep in mind there is an open lobster season for divers, "diver days", in the summer. Make sure you find out when and if you don't plan on participating I wouldn't come during that time. LOTS of people come into the keys for this, so chances are most places are already booked up and if you do find something it's probably at a higher rate. The middle keys goes from ghost town to metropolis overnight, kind of crazy.

Good luck!
