Yup, tons of sail boats and sailors...even ran into one of my neighbors down there! :lmao:

I had a thought about that though...I need to get into the officiating of races/regattas. That would give me awesome opportunities for taking pictures :yay: Unfortunately, the sailing was going on waaaaaay off in the distance, so taking shots from land is...not so good.

Probably easier to get a friend to take you out or chartering a boat than being on Race Commitee...

There are some established photographers that cover Ches Bay events, but the racing community is always looking for pictures. Get out on the water follow the different divisions around and take lots of shots. Submit them to the areas sailing sites. People pay good money for quality work.

When I raced in ANnapolis I got an e-mail from a Helicopter Photography company.. they fly around and try to get shots of all the boat..

$200 a pop, you tell them your boat name, and they send you the pictures, you keep the ones you want and send them $200 per, and return the pics you don't want.

Join the sail club, or just call the sail club, see if you can go out on one of our boats during the FrostBite series. I'm sure they'd let you onboard during the Governors Cup but I think they'd require you to crew also (which in a race like the Gov Cup doesn't add up top much.

Then you can work on pictures like.. http://itsbob.smugmug.com/photos/40389546-M.jpg

During the Frost Bites, that's the normal rail condition..

Took BG out on a Frostbite practice year before last.. she came away wet and bruised.. You're almost knee deep in water when it comes to time to crank the headsail

First time sailing and a storm came up. We novices referred to this boat position a "the holy s###" because we totally freaked out. Our fearless captain almost lost control of the boat because he was laughing at us. Made record time to port on our side the whole way. After that, we realized this was normal. :blushing:

When I'm sailing (as Capt)it still freaks me out and takes me awhile to adjust to having a boat that far over.. But it's a LOT of fun when you get a SMALL boat, like 16.5ft, over in the water like that, and have to use the hiking gear (foot straps) to hang out the other side..

It was an 18 footer. When he jumped up on the side we thought he was abandoning ship. :lmao:

Diablo rings a bell, did he have a "run-in" with one of the Navy boats last season??
Nope. It's been out of the water for a while. It needs repair because 1) it's been out of the water for a while and needs restoration and 2) in the last hurricane, the stand failed and it landed on the keel (OUCH!). Diablo used to be one of the faster boats/crews out there from what I understand. That could be where you know the name from.

Anyway, I'm not a sailor...I guess I should learn. My buddy thinks I'd do a good job trimming the main since I'm a aerohead. I have the technical know-how and a little black-art knowledge. Now I need to get used to the boat heeling over like that.

You can take sailing lessons on base.. CHEAP!!

And trimming the main is fairly easy, unless you have a traveller to worry about too, but normally you have tell-tales on the sail, and the trailing edge to clue you into what to do..

I had that job one race and got caught watching the race, almost t-boned another boat because I was watching the accident instead of easing out the main.. When you're keeled over too much you have no, or very little helm (rudder) and at that point we had no rudder..

Our mainsheet man saved the boat in the Annapolis race.. they accidentally jibed while flying the spinnaker, we started going over and the only thing that saved us was him reaching behind himself while letting out the main to break the spinnaker loose, if he hadn't broke the spinnaker loose we may have gone over in a 42 ft boat... it was a VERY exciting race that day started with mellow winds until the halfway point, then they jumped to 20 - 30 kts.. On the way into Baltimore we crossed under a bridge (Key??) and just as you cleared the bridge everyone was nailed by a HUGE gust... luckily we weren't in first so we got to see everyone else almost turtle over so we were prepared, it was still very exciting.

Sailig is all about the stories.. and if everything goes perfect you have no stories to tell..
