Kitty's 1st day outside...

After a very long debated discussion with my husband spanning over the past 2 months, he opened the door and is letting our kitty outside today. She has condos everywhere in this house but insists on tearing stuff up & within the past 2 weeks, has been pooping on our floor. I swatted her butt so hard the other night; she went to the corner and licked the spot for 10 minutes and hasn’t crapped on my floor since. I know this is a controversial subject but I’ve always been in the opinion that to get a cat and keep them prisoner in a house is not natural. Cleaning a litter box does not bother me (I do this everyday and it wasn't keeping her from crapping on my floor) – it is the other poor behavior that does and it seems the only thing on her fragile little mind is eating & picking on my old kitty that has zero tolerance for her. *ahem* She is familiar with our property because I do walk her on a leash outside often but this is time consuming when I’m the only one taking the time to do it.

On another note, today is going to be beautiful once this rain clears out – enjoy it before the cold snap comes.

What's you opinion on the leash law that applies to ALL pets?

I'm back up to the woods unlike where you live, our lots are 6-8 times the size or more. We had another kitty that went door to door visiting people, nobody complained, in fact, they bought food and treats for him but he never climbed on anyone's vehicle. I know that bugs you about cats (getting on the cars) and if I get a complaint she does such a thing, well, that ends the outside trips - right now she is in my fenced yard.

except the birds and squirrels

The inside story on cats

Squirrels are a huge nuisance and I hate them. If my kitty kills a squirrel, I will praise her but those suckers are fast and it is very rare that cats can even get a hold of one. Birds on the other hand should learn not to dive bomb a cat putting themselves at risk. One day, we watched our old gal get dive bombed outside by a bird and she got it - had it not been messing with her, she wouldn't have bothered with it.

Yeah, damn loose neighbor cats. Crapping all over the deck; building nests in my porch light.

Oh. Wait. That's birds that do that. Nebbermind...

She could be an indoor/outdoor cat! Our's was having simular behaviors, and now that he comes & goes as he pleases, he's been great. Like you, we live acres off the beaten path, and he's been fine. He's neutered, and utd on all his Immunizations.

You'd think that those horrible kitty cats were the only creatures that the Europeans brought over that had an impact on the environment. Goog grief.

She went out this morning for almost 2 hours and has been a pleasure since she came back inside. My old girl walked by, looked behind her seeing this cat sitting in the living room and continued on her way without being chased. My old cat is a feral rescue and is super strange anyway. The stress of being picked on by the younger one was showing, hair falling out and she was dropping weight. This younger kitty has way too much energy to be stuffed in my house all the time for sure.

And....

Call me mean but I really don't care one iota about squirrels or birds - birds can fly and squirrels are fast so if the cat gets either, that is their fault. Seems to me squirrels and birds are better equipped for survival than my cats.

My cats go out. We work for them, opening and closing doors all day.

I'm glad I posted this... because this thread will make me the winner of an argument. My husband swore I started letting our kitty out last year and that was the reason for the flea problem we had last year. It wasn't the reason... his dog brought them in. But last year, this kitty was infested with fleas and it was rather pitiful that our indoor kitty (that we treated with Frontline) had to get constant flea baths when she never stepped 1 paw outside. My oldest cat had no fleas on her and her outdoor outings are fewer and fewer now that she is getting older. The Frontline he was using on his dog wasn't preventing the fleas last year so we have switched to K9 Advantage. I've been telling him that Frontline hasn't been working for many and that it wasn't because of our newest kitty - nor was she even going outside last year.

A little update on our youngest kitty. She loves going outside and never wants to come inside now unless she is hungry or at night. During the day, she can often be found relaxing/sleeping in a chair or playing in our gardens.... or simply stalking me when I'm outside. Our oldest kitty is much happier the baby isn't inside all day and has gained the weight she lost back, coat looks better and she can tolerate the baby now when she is around - unlike before when they would just fight all the time. :ohwell:
