KKK News Channel

I'm on a DOD contract and I work in an Ops Center kind of set up with TV screens all over the place. With some functional limitations, the tv's can be set up so that you have a choice of watching any of the news channels and a couple of cable channels - multiple channels are displayed on the screens in front of you; you just dial into the one you want to listen to on your headphones.

So last night, I had Fox news on one of the viewers - I pretty much ignore the tv, but like to see RedEye when comes on. Another shift of contractors comes on duty and some guy in the front of the room starts ranting (loud) "I'm not watching this KLAN channel" "Turn this KKK channel off". When he was told someone had requested Fox on viewers, he continued "The hell I'm sitting here watching this KLAN shyte" "If I have to sit here and look at this KLAN channel, I'm going to throw a brick through the tv" and he took fox off all of the monitors, not the one in front of him (He had a choice of 6 screens in his view to look at, he just didnt want fox to be one of those 6).

I have another way to watch CNN and Fox, so him turning it off wasn't a huge deal, but his rant really disturbed me.

He has no right to limit what is provided. As a matter of fact, his "censorship" of the Fox channel has large potential to be illegal. I would report the incident to my supervisor since his rant in the workplace constitutes harrassment based on ones views. As another poster said, I would steer clear of the nutjob. (I sincerely hope he does not have a security clearance!!!)

This guy could quite possibly be the smartest man in the room.

If I was a Government supervisor overseeing such an operation; I would create a Civil Service position for this guy and run one of those fake job listings where it doesn't matter who applies because he's going to get the job, hire him, and then fire all you guys.

As a nation we simply can't afford to keep paying Government contractors to sit around in rooms filled with expensive flat screens watching television for God knows how much money per year. Especially workers that don't have enough common sense not to put FAUX News on.

Obviously you aren't in the running for the smartest person in the room. If you were you would know the cost of a government employee over time is much greater than a contractor..

But like I said..

If you hired that guy, you'd be getting someone who actually watches the tv and cries when the ballgames aren't turned on.

Where did I say I sit and watch tv instead of work? My work is a solitary sort of job and sound helps measure the passing of time, more than anything else. There are more than 2 dozen flat screens in the center, all running one news channel or another 24/7. As I said in my original post, my problem wasn't so much that he changed the channel, but the diatribe that went with it. I found it to be hostile and juvenile and uninformed. I felt singled and I had a pretty good idea what he was insinuating.

Once you're no longer pulling fries out of the hot oil when the buzzer rings, you'll find out that there are a lot of people who have jobs that include a lot of downtime sitting at a desk, waiting to respond rather than actively doing something.

..and faux is pronounced like "foe" not fox.

The truth of the backbone guy.
I can sit around and do nothing for days, and nobody notices, but if one of the many servers decides to go belly up, or a switch goes bad, or God forbid we lose connectivity to one of our many locations, I had best be moving fast because an hour of down time can be equal to my entire months pay..

Whole bunch of jobs out there that require no actual work until........ Then you best be on your game.

"GAO recently probed, in-depth, the cost of contractor versus government contract specialists at the Army's Contracting Center for Excellence and found that the Army is paying up to 26 percent more for the contractors as compared to their government counterparts."

U.S. GAO - Defense Acquisitions: DOD's Increased Reliance on Service Contractors Exacerbates Long-standing Challenges

Does that include paying retirement and other benefits? The way I read that article it sounds like it's talking about DIRECT cost. I may cost more per hour, but how about in the long run. And I've never been on a govt contract where I got the kind of overtime my govt counterparts got. Nor did my shift differential come anywhere close to the compensation they got for working weekends or holidays. Nor did I go to half of the training on the govt dime that they went to. I'm inclined to believe it has more to do with government waste (ie all the truck drivers and responders that sat around for months after Katrina doing nothing).

The whole govt/contractor thing is cyclic. They claim they're shrinking the govt and then hire more contractors to replace them, and then a few years later, they cut contracting jobs to save money and replace them with govies....and then a few years later they rinse, repeat.

Very strange..

FNC is usually critical of the democrats and their policies..
The only member of congress that were actually KKK members were democrats.
Seems like news channels that actually support the democrat policies of oppressing minorities would be KKK channels.

:yeahthat:

like paying Fire Fighters to 'sit around' and wait for that call

not having the computers and networks 100% means my company cannot get guests in the door, or sell them chicken strips and we lose 1000's of dollars an hour ....... and have to deal with whiny people like Tiki-Goddess wondering what the hold up is ........ :jet:
