This'll work. but you don't necessarily need a window; but you already knew that.
Now, to do a rough headlight alignment, you can use masking tape or painter's tape on the back bumper of another one (of your own) cars/trucks as markers. Bet'cha knew already knew THAT too, huh.
The taillight/brakelight check; same deal.....kinda. As long as you back up to a solid surface; vinyl siding; another car, you can likely see the lights' reflection in one of the three mirrors.
Or you can buy a VW and it just comes up on the dash and tells you that a light is out, and which one it is so there is no guessing.
I had a 1983 Cadillac that had fiber optic lamp monitors. One above the back window that you could see in the rear view mirror and one on the top of each front fender.

Cool but I think that the ones that showed in the mirrors might be annoying, or maybe you would get used to them.
