Lent

I'm giving up attempting to understand bizzare religous rituals and dogma

Not much to understand. Pretty simple really. Jesus Christ fasted and prayed for 40 days. We are called to imitate Christ, so this is our feeble attempt. It is usually things of this world that tempt us away from God, if we can give up those things then we can get closer to Him.
Scripture says that the spirit is willing, but that the flesh is weak. So, we try to conquer such things so that God becomes our all.

Ok, lack of caffeine headache is starting. How long is this going to last? It's been probably 15 years since I did this before.

You need to wean yourself off the caffeine. Last year I gave up sodas and replaced them with diet Lipton Green Tea :yay: I ended up losing a good chunk of weight also.

This year same thing, soda and fast food.

How many went to mass today (Ash Wednesday) then to work? 41.6% of the people I talked to at work today told me that I had something on my forehead.:lmao:

You don't think that the concept of not eating candy for a month will make you close to God just a little weird?

If you're not Catholic and haven't been Catholic all your life, how could you understand? For me it's just something I have to do for my religious beliefs. Like going to church every week, but then that's probably the most peaceful part of my hectic week.

Well, that depends on whether or not you are going into Lent with the proper intentions. If it is a ritual, as you describe in your earlier post, then yes, it is weird and it won't accomplish much. If, however, you are doing it to imitate Christ, then it is worth a great deal.
For Christians, in Matthew 6 (yesterday's readings BTW) we are told that there are righteous deeds that can be/are done for which God will "repay" us. God doesn't "repay" us with things of this world, he pays us with spiritual gifts, like temperance, fortitude, etc. Those are the virtues that it will take to get through these 40 days, but for love of Him, we can.
Lent is not a reason to go on a diet, it is a prayer with the body, so to speak. John the Baptist did it, and Jesus Christ did it, so we do it.

My wifes family is Catholic - My family is Baptist, so God is God - it is about how you worship and get there in the end... :yay:

When we go and visit her family this time of year and Lent is on - the first time I ordered steak on a Friday they looked at me like I had three heads. Now, it is a joke with us and we all get a kick out of it!

From my perspective - the rib joints and steak houses are thin this time of year!

Which reminds me - Why no red meat on Friday? What is the signifigance of that??
