Lets talk about Skyline Drive

So I am pondering a ride this spring. Figure to take off a weekday, a Tuesday perhaps. Ride down to Fredericksburg, then up to Front Royal to catch the entrance there. South to 64 near Waynesboro, then back to F burg via 64/22/221/15, then 218 back to Dahlgren.

Figure about 11-12 hours on the road, what with stops and meals. Opinions?

About 20 years or more ago, that was pretty much exactly the 'ride' that a group of us took every fall..when the leaves had turned. It was a long day in the saddle..and I was a lot younger.

And I was the proud owner of that then-radical new piece of 2-wheel Honda technology..a water-cooled, transverse v-twin, shaft-driven CX500...having just sold my Yamaha RD400 to buy it.

OK..guess it was actually 30 years ago..plus. Crap I hate gittin old.

Thats why I'm thinking Tuesday in the spring as the best. No damn leaf peepers (as we used to call them when I was growing up in New England:)) Wednesday, you get folks playing hooky for hump day. Thursday and Friday, you get folks taking off for early weekends.

Do an overnight and go south on the Blueridge Parkway

218 into Fredericksburg, Rt.3 to 20, Rt.15 in Orange south to 64 then west to Waynesboro and sout on the Parkway to Medows of Dan which has a campground, a hotel a resturant and a gas station (and not much else). You'll be a bout 5 miles north of Marby Mill, great photo op. then ride on home

I trailered to my folks house in VA, then left early in the AM for the Ridge. Middle November, mid-50s. At the base. Below freezing on the ridgetop. yikes. My goal was Staunton to Luray Caverns, then back-track. Only got as far as Big Meadows absolutely frozen to the bone. Came off the mountain at Rt 33 just to warm up.

Next time I anticipate cooler mountain temps, and plan to stop for an extended time on the ridge at one of the campsites and do some hiking.

:whipped:

 Late May should be ok, but it can still be pretty cool up there. I'd bring warm clothes.

Silver Wing? And if so did you have the right turn signals when you got rid of it?

The Silverwing wasnt til the early 80s, I think. It was the GL500. Same basic motor, but not the UJM that the CX was. One of my boot camp instructors had one, and I would see it on the far side of the fence every day, ad thought how much cooler it would be to be riding that than being in boot camp:)

Mine looked a lot like the polic bike in that pic..except it was red and had a different seat with a hard luggage rack behind the seat...and no bags

The "Silver Wing" thing must have come out soon after...but I don't recall it. I kept the CX500 until I bought a Yamaha Vision a couple years later (LOL..I guess I had a 'thing for water-cooled, shaft drive, v-twins)

An exact pic of the Vision I had, color and all, is linked below. I added a small sport wind-screen/fairing later.

If you like to putter, fine. I'd lose my mind (and my license) if I road my bike on it. If you insist, weekday is the way to go. However, you can observe proper, legal speed on weekends if you don't mind rolling parking lots.

While I enjoy a good romp on the throttle from time to time, I dont really push my bikes too hard, not like I do my cars. I couldnt do a weekend day up there on a bike because a smooth cruise is what I am after. Dont need to drag a knee, just cruise. One of the best rides I ever took in my life was out to NAS Lemoore, in CA from Moffett Field in the Bay area. Took the 101 down to Route 138 from San Lucas through Coalinga. Just an amazing ride....
