Lets talk about Skyline Drive

While I enjoy a good romp on the throttle from time to time, I dont really push my bikes too hard, not like I do my cars. I couldnt do a weekend day up there on a bike because a smooth cruise is what I am after. Dont need to drag a knee, just cruise. One of the best rides I ever took in my life was out to NAS Lemoore, in CA from Moffett Field in the Bay area. Took the 101 down to Route 138 from San Lucas through Coalinga. Just an amazing ride....

San Lucas, CA to NAS Lemoore (NLC), Riverdale, CA 93656 - Google Maps

I am not a knee dragger. Beyond my skill set! I am a floorboard scraper. :diva:

I just get bored if it's just 55 and little leaning.

I could probably scrape a boot sole in a corner if I stuck my leg out far enough...my '47 Harley being the legendary 2-g-cornering GP machine that it is.

But I'm OK with it if everyone else wants to go slow.

A Silver Wing? What is that? I bought my CX500 in 1979 and don't recall anything called a Silver Wing.

Basically same bike..

You could get the bags and the fairing with the Silver Wing, or be a UJM..

Mine was a UJM. Picked up a 1982 Silver Wing from the dealer in 1984 right from the crate for $1200. There were HUNDREDS of them at every Honda Dealer. Something about a trade embargo/ tarrifs in 1981 - 1983, all the Japanese bikes kept producing and putting them in storage, in 1984 they dumped them all in the US.. Suzuki, Yamaha, and Honda had LOADS of brand new 2 and 3 year old bikes dirt cheap.

The motor had some unbelievble torque that would pull the bike down on it's right side if you cracked the throttle hard. Must of been 50 - 100 of these same bikes on Ft Knox, not a one of them with right turn signals.

Oh, and the Silver Wing had a box that replaced the backseat so you had what looked like a single seater cafe racer.

In spite of that..I've never owned another street bike before or since that would long-walk a wheelstand like that one would. Something about being so tall but short of wheelbase...

That's the way my CL350 was. Front wheel was always coming off the ground.

My very first 'street' bike was a Honda CL72 (250cc 'scrambler'). The front wheel on that came off the ground if I put a floor jack under the frame...but never otherwise.

My next move was in to a CL77 of the same model year. Nope..front tire still firmly stuck on the ground with that one too.

So then I got a '69 (yup..first year..but I bought it used) CB750. I could get a little air under the front tire with that one if I tried real hard.......

Those were steam powered, weren't they?

pffft. Shows what you know. They ran on paraffin...but whale oil would work in a pinch.

I had a '63 Benelli 350 too. Single cylinder pushrod engine. No muffler. I got it really cheap,,and it had only first gear and fourth gear. Had no rear brakes..just front. Rode that thing hard until first gear crapped on me...and believe you me, you knew it was me coming. "BWAAAaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiieeeeeee..shift.shift.shift...bup bup buppa buppa .." Play backwards for a downshift.

I was the coolest kid in the 'hood.

If it only had 1st and 4th, didn't it really have just 1st and 2nd?

Depending on the speed, I think a ticket would be cheaper than a cheap radar detector lol.
Its a great road anywho and I just wish it were closer.

The fines for the tickets in Va go up real fast and the one for the detector is not one you want. Lot's of other roads in VA/ W Va that aren't so heavily patroled...

It's an equipment violation, they just confiscate it.
A $30-$40 detector is cheaper than a ticket

Those guys up on Skyline arent packing the latest and greatest speed detection tech, really. They save that stuff for high volume places like 95 and the beltway, I think. That said, I would just keep it to 44 or so, in the 34 stretches. Oddly enough, I picked up a sort of touring motorcycle mag, it had a feature on Skyline. then I go to catch up on my Top Gears, and catch the one where they went to Skyline with three awesome cars, only to find it the limits, and promptly leave:)

I think it was Clarkson in the SLS, May in the Fararri and Hammond in the Porsche. They also went to Capital speedway in the rain and VIR to have some real fun. :yahoo:
