Light bulbs...

Talk about boring, this thread is about light bulbs.

Compact fluorescents bulbs have reduced significantly in price since January (not sure if people realized that). They used to run $6-8 a bulb, now about $3.50 a bulb. I dismissed them earlier in the year, because that is just too much money for a light bulb.

Anyway, I just replaced several bulbs in my house last week and have ordered another batch. The light is pretty good and better than expected. I have a bathroom with a string of 8 lights, so every time I flicked the switch it was 480 watts, now 104 watts.

Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: Globe 13-Watt Ultra-Mini Compact Fluorescent Spiral Bulb (60-Watt Incandescent Equivalent), Cool White, 4-Pack #48412

I’m wondering, has anyone completely switched to compact fluorescents and if so, did you noticed a drop in your electric bill? I was surprised at the lack of reviews out there for this product.

Still not bad, considering the energy savings and that they last much longer.

Many people have been apprehensive, as you were. I will buy some the next time I need bulbs; I just haven't had to replace any in the last few months.

Hubby and I were thinking of systematically changing over all of our bulbs to compact flourescent, but then we read the warning message on the package. Something about containing mercury and needing to be disposed of appropriately, dire circumstances, etc. They also warned about breakage of the bulbs. So, we started thinking, what if we dropped one, or two, or three? Would our cats become retarded (kids are already grown so we don't have to worry about them). Anyway, we decided to stick with regular bulbs until we hear more...

Cats are already retarded.

We bought some of the fluorescents last year, and I hated the harsh light they gave off. Not wanting to waste them, we banished them to the overhead light in the office. Last month was "light bulb replacement month" (I hate that they all go out at the same time :jameo:), and the fluorescent bulbs crapped out right on schedule with the regular bulbs. We won't be buying them again. :dead:

I think it would be only logical that they would reduce your monthly electric bill.

One thing I did fail to mention earlier, there is a delay when you flick the switch.
If I had to guess, I would say that delay is 2 seconds. Not a big deal. These bulbs are guaranteed to last 5 years or they will replace them.

The timing was pretty good for me on this. Those bathroom lights I mentioned, well, I have 18 total between the 3 bathrooms and about 10 were burned out. They are a type of studio light bulb and they are about $3.00 a piece.

You know Nic, all my bulbs crap out at the same time too. :ohwell:

I have broken 2 of those really long ones(the kind that goes in those shop lights) in the last 2 days

I think I need to call the vet

I was unaware of that, so I did a little reading. Seems that breaking one will not greatly harm anyone - unless you snort the powder - but it is advisable to be careful when cleaning up a broken one, maybe even opening a window to ventilate. When disposing them, they should be recycled, because in great numbers they can harm the water supply.

Stupid kitten was sitting in the Christmas tree this morning. BF had to untangle her from the lights. I'm slightly worried she'll hang herself. :faint:

thats one of the reasons i'm on the fence about putting up a tree - between the dogs tail, the cat, the dog chasing the cat up the tree, i had no ornanments from the middle of the tree to the bottom. being an artificial tree wtih pre-strung lights, they were always going out. a little table top tree its sounding better and better

We have CF bulbs in the basement lights, exterior lights and light at the bottom of our steps into the basement. Love them. The fixture outside our mudroom shakes when you close the door hard (crappy builder) and regular bulbs broke whn used there due to it. The CF bulbs aren't affected by the shaking.

Walmart has the 3-paks for $5-6.00. I switched over and didn't notice any difference in the light. Make sure you leave them on awhile. You can step up in wattage too if you don't think you're getting enough light. The consumption is still way less. They're great for the lights you leave on like outside lights and night lights.

As far as safety goes, they're fine. I noticed a considerable drop in my electric bill. :yay:

I'm waiting for the price of LEDs to drop... then I'll start switching out my standard bulbs to LED bulbs.

:yeahthat: I was always blowing out bulbs in the garage door opener, even the ones made just for that. Replaced them with CF bulbs, have had them in there for about 2.5 years now.
