Light Rail/Communter Rail to the Base and DC?

Does anyone else feel that Southern Maryland needs commuter rail service???? I drive to and back from DC everyday and spend about 3-4 hours on the road. I do carpool, but that doesn't seem too be helping to much....

I agree with you and I think they should have something like that. I commute to school in Vienna VA and it sucks and its only the second week in the quarter.

If we had commuter rail service, I would leave the car at home and commute by train to work. I would ride over driving any day.

1 full day of work and school total will put 200 miles on my car, luckily I only go to school twice a week.

If there was a commuter rail between SOMD and DC, I probably would not have moved away.

I'm not even kidding.

There is definately a market for it, but...

you knew there was a but coming...

just as with the BB Stadium in Hughesville, the NIMBYs will cry and moan that it will destroy the small town character of the area.

MAYBE, MAYBE we will get public rail transit by the time my GRANDKIDS retire.

NIMBY's

Yeah, gotta dislike those people. But, I think St. Mary's lost its "small town" feel when they put up Walmart, Kmart, First Colony, Wildewood, etc. Plus, the BOCC over the years has given away so much of the old railroad right of way that it will cost a pretty penny to buy those rights back from property owners. I think a line from Pax to the Branch Ave. or even to Union Station would be a huge help. Heck, Metro is going to dig its way to Dulles, I think we southern marylanders should voice our opinions on this.

Why would you start the line at PAX? That would just cram all the commuters down here with the people smart enough to move to where there job is. Put it on 235 north of Hollywood where there would be some parking.

I think a lot of people would use the rail service to commute to PAX. A lot of the people I talk to who work on Base wish they had other options besides dealing with the traffic on 235.

Get Branch Ave. to Waldork first and then talk about bringing it down here....

UP, you do know there is a bus service right?

The Bus Service sucks, and it takes twice as long to ride the bus to DC then it does driving. If we had rail service the commute would cut by a lot less, and be comparable to driving to work in the city.

:yeahthat: I would say that if it got to Waldorf it would be worth it for the commuters.

Sorry, I didn't realize this was a scientific study, I'll leave :duh:

Well if driving and the bus are your only options right now. And you don't seem to like driving. I figgered you might want to give the bus a try...but since you already think the bus service sucks, you must have already used it in the past.

Maybe a more realistic option would be to bring the rail from Branch Ave. down to Waldork, then have commuter bus service from Hollywood area to Waldorf.

It's not a scientific study. I was just making a comment. If I worked on base I would rather sit in a train in the morning and read my newspaper, and drink my coffee.

I carpool in the mornings and then three nights out of the week I use the Bus to get home. The seats are really uncomfortable. After getting off the Bus you feel like you need to go see a doctor to correct your back. Plus you have all these grouchy people sitting close to you. At least on the train you would have a little room to breathe, and you wouldn't be on it for two hours.

if you can afford to live in DC...sure :yay:

I used to live in Northwest near Adams Morgan. I decided to move down here because I'm from Hollywood. Because of the commute I'm thinking about moving back up there soon. I've only been down here now for two years, and I'm already thinking about moving.
