I read the search has been called off and they have been declared dead.
Apparently she took her son to a house her mother owns to shelter in place from COVID in DC.
Husband was still in DC with their other two children.

The initial police radio call said they went in to retrieve a ball that had got kicked or blown into the water.
and if they weren't related to Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, there would be no search and people would be saying how foolish of them to risk their lives for a ball.

There would have been a search. Now, would C-130s have been deployed? I don't know.
If they went into that kayak/canoe/whatever it was, and they weren't wearing a flotation device of any kind, they were dead as soon as the vessel flipped. The temperature of the water would have given them hypothermia in about an hour, not to mention their clothes would have weighed them down enough to pull them under. That's if they could keep their heads above 3 foot swells to begin with. As sad as it is to say, the search was futile from the beginning.

Even with PFDs, temps and waves would have rapidly exhausted and overwhelmed anyone not wearing thermal protection.

Yep, God bless the inventors of life jacket and the wet suit.
(saved my a*s several years ago, kayaking in the Pacific)

I don’t understand why the effort was made to retrieve a ball. I am familiar with boating of all kinds, and check the weather every day. I am at a loss of why this happened. The Kennedy’s are cursed.

I read they were at a family gathering and the ball went in the water thus the retrieval attempt... family gathering... hmm.
I read that too, and it was a group of children kicking the ball around. My gut tells me her child kicked it, the ball went in the water, and her Super Mom psyche kicked in but her judgement didn't. By then it was too late. I'm sad for the child, but it was probably destiny for the adult. Water, air travel, and Kennedys just don't seem to mix well.

Filed under the heading of "Wierd things that pop into your head", I wonder if there's a rule that all members of that clan have to have "Kennedy" as one of their middle names.

Clout.

They were sheltering in place but had a family gathering.(?) Lived in DC so may not have had the best idea of how to operate a canoe. The wind was blowing its ass off all day and someone on here posted that a small craft warning had been posted every day that week but even if you don't pay attention to the forecast, nothing beats the Mk1 Mod0 eyeball.

True, saying there would not have been a search was hyperbole, what I should have said the assets used and the time spent would have been far less for someone not politically connected. Particularly when dealing with COVID-19, far less involved.
