I liked the like button for 2 reasons. First, it allowed me to respond to a post without having to go through the whole reply process, and second, it allows the OP to know that someone actually read their post and at least nominally responded to it. Same thing is true for my own posts; if no one "likes" them, maybe it's time for a different subject.
I find it particularly useful in the entertainment threads.
