Not true. I reitred an "E" (as you call it) and never had a problem. It's all about choices. Many of these guys chose to have families too early. So it's not the pay that causes their financial problems, it's the living beyond their means.

The thing about the military that doens't really exist anywhere else is promotions are completely fair and EVERYONE has the opportunity to be promoted and promoted quickly. THAT is your "parity".
I meant pay parity Enlisted to Officer as it relates to experience/ability. An E-8 with 22 years still makes less than an O-3 with 4 years. A 26 year E-9 makes less than a 10 year O-4. If an Enlisted person wants to get pay parity with mid-level O's he needs to track toward CWO or LDO.

You retired an E-5?

This is true though. I don't know how many I called in for financial counselling that were E-4 with 2 kids and a $500 a month car payment and insurance was $150 a month.

.
Nope. Can't make it to retirement in the Army as an E-5. I had two kids as an E-4, and I take that back I was an E-4 when my first was born,5 for the second, 6 for the third.. 7 for the fourth.

Retired E-7 with 4 kids.

Yep, all in all, after the first couple years, military pay really isn't that bad.

not in 1984 ......... as an E3 i barely got 900 a month, 1

didn't know about filing for Food Stamps [ not sure you could then ?] - Got WIC while the ex wife was pregnant both times

:coffee:

Right before I got out ....... from my LES - amazing what you file and save

E4 Pay 01-31 Aug 1988
Basic Pay 928.20
Overseas Sep. 13.00
Family Sep. 60
BAQPD 280.80
VHA 18.14

Take home after taxes and insurance, and $50 Collage Fund 1058.79

When Stationed at Fort Carson 85-87 as an E3 it was less .... and the rent alone was $500 - yeah I probably could have gotten sh!thole closer to Base - my drive was 10 miles one way, but wanted as far from the Army during my off time as possible ...... i was closer to the Air Force Academy ......

The First couple months I was in Co Spgs @ Fort Carson I got this Counseling Statement - that included not taking proper care of my wife, because we did not have furniture yet.

My ex wife was a Type A - went through the roof - it was none of there effn business if we had furniture or not and she let the 1st Sgt [ E-8 company head NCO if you don't know Army Company Structure] know   :tap: :whip: the next time she was down to pick me up after being in the Field Training - she let the 1st Sgt if she had an issue she know the Company # and how to use the phone - Yeah I was real popular with the Chain of Command after that ....... :bigwhoop: Got to give her credit though no more word about furniture or taking proper care of my family .....

I was expect to run out to rent a center and get a couch, coffee table, dinning room table and chairs ...... had already bought a bed ........

Gotcha... You may already know that most career enlisted folks would consider it a move backwards in terms of skill and craft to become an officer. Where the enlisted folks perform the actual technical work they maintain a proficiency that officer don’t because they typically push paper. From that aspect I never did appreciate a butterbar that has absolutely no experience telling me how to fix something that I have been working on for 10 years, and gets paid 3 times more to do that, all because they have a college degree. But, it’s all about choices. I chose to be enlisted and wouldn’t trade it for nothing.

What this article doesn't say is that she has an outstanding warrant in Mississippi for writing bad checks. She denies the charges BUT her family is willing to pay to cover the bad checks...

I heard this on WTOP Wed night.
That has been a big topic in the news. Everyone is wondering why the judge overlooked this. I didn't get to hear the judges comments so it's just a guess on my part, but the only rationale I can think of is her husband is in Iraq and she has to take care of the kids without him. I think the judge was thinking about the kids and the fact that it's not the kids' or the mother's fault that he is in Iraq. All I know is her husband can't be too happy with all this happening while he is out of country fighting a war. He has enough to worry about than a wife commiting crimes back home.

I remember my take home pay when I was in Germany.. the first time.

Now I lived in the barracks so housing was free, but I still took home $193 a payday on the 15th and the 30th or 31st.

I did not give a rats ass if they all slept on the floor. I only did financial counseling when I got a call from Rent-a-center because their account was 90 days passed due, the motorcycle they bought was wrecked and they had not made a payment in 6 months and the bank wanted it back, Sears wanted the $1000 fridge back because the goober had not made a payment in 7 months (and he lived in housing:confused), the call from Blockbuster that Johnny had $700 in late fees and wouldn't pay up and the ever popular misuse of the government credit card everyone was issued a few years ago like; $900 balance for liquor store purchases.

I did have to do counselling a few times when Henry Deadbetween the ears went on deployment and left his wife and kid at home in housing and didn't send any money home for them to live on.

It was about then I really started doubting mankind.

OMG, that's effective Oct 1980 so since I came in the Navy in April of 1980 I was actually making about $480 dollars a month as an E-1 under 2. Back then I was stationed on a Guided Missile Frigate out of Charleston, SC and since I wasn't married drew no BAQ/VHA and lived on the ship for my first 3 years. We didn't even get sea pay back then if you were E-3 and below. I did however play catch up and retired an O-3E with 24 yrs. :coffee:
