Medical Error & Accountability

A recent blood test during a routine physical mistakenly showed that I have extremely high glucose and cholesterol levels. We didn't know this was a mistake at first, so I was prescribed unnecessary medication and started monitoring my glucose/cholesterol levels at home. Also, I had to go back for another test and doctor's visit to get this corrected. Here is the problem: my time and money were wasted because of this error but the health care workers actually profitted from this mistake that they caused. Where is the accountability? I deserve compensation but none was offered. It's not clear whether the mistake was cause by the doctor's office or the lab. I've started looking for a new internist. I should do more, like complain to the authorities.... What would be the correct things to do in this case?

Count your blessings they didn't kill you with the prescription drugs and move on with your life.
Don't you realize allopathic medicine is an "art" and you are the canvas?

I get the impression you are one of those sue happy people that are way to prevalent these days.

Doctors and labs err occasionally. You weren't harmed. Move on with your life and quit being a putz.

1.) I am so sorry you were treated improperly :huggy:

2.) Doctors are not perfect and they make mistakes too. :huggy:

3.) If you are feeling the need to get sue-happy, you need to move to New Jersey because we don't like all that mess here in SoMD. :huggy:

4.) Don't post on the forums if you don't want people to rip you to shreds. :huggy:

Oh! And have a fantabulous day. :cheesy:

How is that for diplomatic? :really:

Everybody seems to think you are wanting to sue. I can't help you there. I believe nowadays you have to sign somthing releasing a doctor anyway before you are ever seen.

However, we have many incompetent doctors in our area. Or so it seems to me. With ObamaCare in the picture, it seems the doctors are the worst of the worst instead of the best of the best. :ohwell:

The best thing to do is to report them so that 1) others are informed when they research a new doctor and 2) maybe we can get them out of practice.

First I would go on Healthgrades and rate them (like Yelp reviews)
Healthgrades > Find a Doctor | Doctor Reviews | Hospital Ratings

Then I would report them to the MD Board of Physicians.
Maryland Board of Physicians Home Page

Yes, you were lucky. However, their next patient may not be.

I think this is way to extreme for a simple blood work error. The Doctor didn't do the blood work, the lab did. He simply read the results he was given.

Jesus people get outta control easily!

I was misdiagnosed as well once and that had me all :jameo:

I think many doctors aren't doctor's anymore. They are med insurance billing machines (you can only have a 5 minute visit) and big pharma.

Yes. The health care workers made a quick buck off me by making a medical error.

well.... if at any moment you thought the blood work sounded off ...

1.... you should have requested it to be done
2..... looked for another dr to get a 2nd opinion

... the dr DIDNT make you take the meds

I have question dr about meds he wanted to give me and why.

You really think that is why they are in business? To make a quick buck off everyone by making errors?

You're pathetic. You go ahead and sue. Let me know how that works out for ya. :coffee:

However the doctor saw the patient, ordered the blood work, read the blood work and chose to put the person on meds assuming the doc knew med history etc. You do know there are alternatives to a lot of prescriptions as well?

 It's up to the OP as to how he feels about his/her experience.

Exactly. I am sending mine his $copay every six months and I feel right as rain AND have no more ailments. Now my sick time can used for the original purpose - playing with the dogs and horsing around the house.

So you expect Doctors to be perfect. Gotcha.

Good luck with that. :coffee:

I never had a "5 minute" appt. My Doctor takes whatever time is needed to see me.

To you all whining about Doctors....

There was a documentary on Discovery Channel years ago called "So you want to be a Doctor". It chronicled a doctors life from first year of college through the 8th year of medical school/residency.

Lets see you go through 36 hours straight with no sleep, study and pass tests, build up $100,000.00's dollars in debt all for about $36K a year while in school.

There was also an article in Readers Digest called "Perform that surgery yourself" for those who complained about the costs of Doctors. Put yourself through 8 years of school, pass the boards and let me know how it works out for ya.

I wanna know why you all don't have medical degrees since you're so critical of Doctors. Wish I was that smart. :duh:

No. Medicine is a science. You are saying, it's OK to make medical mistakes.
