Michael Bloomberg Wants Private, Armed Police Force Patrolling Johns Hopkins

Yooper

Up. Identified. Lase. Fire. On the way.
NYC's former mayor and Johns Hopkins celebrated alum (& donor), Michael Bloomberg, wants the university to have an armed police force saying it’s 'ridiculous' the institution doesn't have an armed police force. "When you have a city that has the murder rate that Baltimore has, I think it’s ridiculous to think that they shouldn't be armed."

State Sen. Mary Washington, a Democrat whose Senate district includes the Homewood campus, has said she’s worried a campus police force at a private college such as Hopkins wouldn't be accountable to the public — unlike similar police departments at public colleges. She urged the university to come up with more creative ideas to solving Baltimore’s crime problem. Washington suggested Johns Hopkins sign a memorandum of understanding for a special unit of the Baltimore Police Department to patrol near the school.

News-worthy I thought.

Not an issue. All they need to do is hire Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. Problem solved.

That only works as an analogy if you knock out the walls.

What is the need? I haven't read of anyone being raped or murdered in Johns Hopkins.
Baltimore City Police are available to them, and although their performance is sometimes spotted, they should be capable of handling anything that happens there.
After all Johns Hopkins is a large place and the possibility of their own force being on the spot when something happened is not all that certain.

Is Johns Hopkins having problems with criminals/

Have you ever been there? It's smack dab in the middle of the ghetto. This big beautiful hospital surrounded by crumbling row houses and drug people walking around. Don't bother having your doctor prescribe you a pain reliever - you can get it cheaper from one of the guys standing out in front of the building.

On another note, I saw in the news that JH had purchased the Newseum in DC. The Newseum board cites "unsustainable operating costs" as the reason for shutting its doors and selling to some other fatcat, but here you go:

http://www.newseum.org/2019/01/25/f...nsylvania-avenue-to-johns-hopkins-university/

Read that and your head will ####ing explode. It's pretty obvious that the board used that museum to line their own pockets and the pockets of their cronies, and now they're crashing it for the big payout. So any of you who donated to the Freedom Foundations for the specific purpose of help funding the Newseum - like I did - sorry for your luck. That'll learn me to not give these people a dime of my money.

That was the museum that charged $30 admission, right ? Maybe they should have charged $60 to break even.

That's the one. There's no reason why they couldn't have made their operating costs except for that was never the plan. It was obviously a graft scheme to begin with and nothing more.

The hospital is in a bad neighborhood I give you that, but their police would not be in the street and I haven't seen any news stories of trouble in the hospital.

We have to go there about once a month. The only comparable equivalent that I know of in the country
is the Longwood Medical Area in Boston, where Harvard Medical School is, along with Children's, Brigham
and Women's, Harvard School of Public Health, Beth Israel, Dana Farber Cancer Institute - and so on.
Right smack dab in one of the worst areas of Boston. When I worked there, a friend of mine was mugged
at the bus stop, and I witnessed a knifing.

Ironically - Mass General sits right beside Beacon Hill, which is like the Beverly Hills of Boston due to
the long history of wealthy people there.

In DC, Georgetown, Children's and George Washington are all in decent areas. The nation's foremost
hospitals, like the Mayo Clinic, are often in good areas.

But in all honesty - I don't like ANY area of Baltimore. I'd be hard pressed to think of anywhere in
the city I'd rather JH be, because there's no single large area of Baltimore that isn't a craphole.

You got that right Baltimore is a craphole.

To answer Vrai's question, Yes I have been there, and its a bad drive over potholed crappy Streets. But turn into Caroline St. and it takes you right there, the parking lots are off Caroline and they have Valet parking if you want it. I have never seen or read of anyone having a problem on the campus.Although I am quite sure it has happened, but do they really need a private armed police force?

And why in the flying hell does she think that the University needs to do jack to solve the cities crime problem. Like this BS that Bmore wants the state to fund extra officers and another police academy just for Baltimore. If the city cant "handle it's business" then the damn city can declare bankruptcy and allow the state to take it over. More toilet paper down a plugged shi%^hole will not clear the pipes.

I say no because guns are bad and walls don't work. That Michael Bloomberg would even suggest it speaks to his white supremacy and patriarch privilege, not to mention racism and last but not least, mansplaining. Did I miss any? Hell, Bloomberg is practically the KKK. Wonder how many women he raped yesterday.

On a related note, why must every single police officer be armed? At the very least, why does every officer need to carry it at all times? I can see 1-2 on a shift carrying for urgent situations but arming everyone invites them to pull guns on people.
