thats just me. I don't expect anyone else to leave 30% But most servers I know would do the same.

That's not what you said before. You said you expected a minimum of 20%.

Because the customer who can afford to pay $150 for two to dine at an upscale establishment, can also afford the $30/20% (or more) tip.

I don't particularly have a problem with tipping a percentage of the total bill. And I darn sure expect better service AND a better quality of service at the Tides, than at any local chain restaurant.

You know, this brought to mind the day I had lunch at the little tea place in L-town. Ever see the prices on their menu? Getting a waitress to come to your table is like pulling teeth, then while they're listening to you their eyes glaze over.

:yeahthat:

that is how I feel... and like many other things, I realize that I cannot and will not persuade attitudes to change or share opinions on certain matters. So, how others feel on this is not my problem although it does irritate me to some degree. :peace:

You said 20% minimum for minimum service, more for stellar service. So which is it?
Go back and read my posts. I said 20% for stellar service.I never ever said that bad service deserved 20%. I wouldn't leave 20% for bad service either.

I've been to the Tides a few times (lunch and dinner) and it is EXCELLENT. They have outstanding service, and THAT is what gets good tips. They don't only spend a few minutes at your table, they are "servers" and not Flo from Mel's slapping some meatloaf on your plate. They are polite, they use proper ettiquette- no a$$ scratching and teeth picking.
It is probably the nicest restaurant St Mary's county has right now- and it is affordable. I know very few people who could afford to eat there every night- but it's great for special occasions (and food snobs.)
But the Tasting of Foie Gras is YUCK!!!! (that's liver pate, by the way!)

I talked to Arthur Ehrlich- the manager- (he also made us some really yummy flambéed bananas) and the Tides is supposed to be a dining "experience." Not just dinner. They treat you like you are the most important person on the planet for a little while- and everyone needs that sometimes. It feels good and I'm willing to pay a little extra. The good tip is for the server who works hard to make people feel important. If you think tipping well is shoving your money up someone's a$$- then don't go to a restaurant that goes above and beyond cooking and serving.

Foie Gras is french for "fat liver". Pate can be made from several different types of liver.
