" WASHINGTON - New research is highlighting the growing importance of Vitamin D, which is often called the "sunshine" vitamin.

A study conducted at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis shows that Vitamin D prevents clogged arteries in diabetics.

Once linked primarily to bone health, this is just the latest piece of evidence showing that Vitamin D's benefits are actually far more wide-reaching than previously thought. "

My doctor told me to take a 1000mg vitamin along with my daily multi vitamin.

About a year ago I went to the doctor because I was exhausted all of the time - felt like I was hauling a pallet of bricks behind me kind of fatigue. Blood test showed I had really low Vitamin D levels and she put me on a 50,000 ui tablet that I took once a week. She mentioned that going outside every day with my sleeves rolled up for about 15 minutes would give me enough vitamin D once I got my levels up where they belonged. It took a few months, but the fatigue finally subsided.

Now I see by this article that low Vitamin D is linked to colon cancer as well - I had a cancerous polyp removed last year as well. I wonder if there's a connection.

Yikes. Well I find remembering to take the special D pill once a week pill is hard to do. I forget to take it most of the time, which is surely why I still feel exhausted so much.

Yeah, I figured I'd have trouble remembering, too. So I taped a reminder on the top of one of my other daily pill bottles. So I knew every day when I took my meds that Thursday was Vitamin D day. The pill helped; I had to take it for a few months. I paid about $5 for a month's worth of pills, which was way less than if I'd taken some OTC daily vitamin D. I try my best to get outside for a few minutes every day now.

Having Fun!
Almost 2 years ago, doc called me with blood test results & said I had low Vitamin D levels and should take 2000 mg supplements "every day for like... F..O..R..E..V..E..R."

God help me, all I could think of at the time was that one scene from the movie "The Sandlot" where the kids are telling stories in the treehouse and the one kid has the flashlight shining up towards his face telling about the big, huge, mean dog having to be kept chained up F..O..R..E..V..E..R.

Curse that visual mind that remembers mostly everything that it sees... :lmao:

Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to Accelerated Aging o

"July 10, 2013 — Everyone knows that as we grow older our bones become more fragile. Now a team of U.S. and German scientists led by researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and the University of California (UC) Berkeley has shown that this bone-aging process can be significantly accelerated through deficiency of vitamin D -- the sunshine vitamin.

Vitamin D deficiency is a widespread medical condition that has been linked to the health and fracture risk of human bone on the basis of low calcium intake and reduced bone density. However, working at Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light ALS), a DOE national user facility, the international team demonstrated that vitamin D deficiency also reduces bone quality."

Just an FYI...

Anyone who has sore shins (as in they feel bruised without actually being bruised) for no apparent reason may have a vitamin D deficiency. My ortho-oncologist discovered my deficiency when during an exam he ran his thumbs up my shins. The pain nearly shot me to the ceiling. He told me shin pain was a classic sign of D deficiency. I've since been on a supplement and my shins have been pain free ever since.

After using the OTC Vit D, the Dr. put me on a RX to take 1 time per week. You have any idea how hard it is to remember to take that thing? I forget more than I remember.

I can only imagine. I have to set reminders on my phone for everything because my brain dumps everything each night when I go to sleep.

I recall an episode of Married with Children in which Kelly Bundy's brain was full and as data went in 1 ear, it was pushing out data from the other ear LOL - I felt like that as I neared the end of classes for my degree - my brain was FULL LOL

Do you go to church?

There must be some activity that you only do once a week on a regular basis

Nope nothing that is regularly once weekly that I can tie the memory to. I guess I'll have to resort to a weekly alarm on my phone. I just had blood drawn Saturday for another round of tests so if it shows I'm still deficient in Vit D I'll tell the doc I keep forgetting to take it so he won't increase my dose.

Speaking of the lab, I went to Quest in Waldorf on Old Wash. Road. OMG that guy was the WORST at taking blood by how much pain I felt. They either need to pay their people more to get better tech's, or send him back to school. I'd like to stick him as hard as he stuck me - with a needle (you know who you are that needed that clarification lol) ..... left me with blood oozing into my body as apparently he went straight through the other side of the vein? I will never let that man touch me again. On my way out, there was a lady there with children, and I said to the front desk guy that I would ask for the person who does the children the next time, because that HURT bad.

Speaking of doc's - I will be changing mine. He can never seem to send my electronic RX's to the correct pharmacy, requires me to pay for 2 office visits to (1) order the lab test then (2) tell me the results so I can get renewed RX's, his office carpet is filthy, all of the chairs look stained as if people had many accidents in them - I don't even want to sit down in there. He always tell me to stop smoking and I always say I do NOT smoke and I didn't even KNOW you when I did, he seems to have other things on his mind, leaves you waiting an hour or more for your 3 minute appt., so ... I will get my RX's this time and I am on the hunt for a new doc - I know I said this before but this time I mean it. Do you have any idea how much they charge people to get a copy of their medical record? It should be MY record, and if they want to keep a copy they should make a copy at their expense! Ok I'm done.

Vitamin D Doesn't Cut Blood Pressure: Study

"Many studies have linked low levels of vitamin D to high blood pressure. But new research has found taking vitamin D supplements does not appear to improve blood pressure or cardiovascular health in older patients with hypertension.

The study — led by Miles D. Witham of the University of Dundee, Scotland — involved 159 patients with isolated systolic hypertension (a type of high blood pressure) who were randomly assigned to take vitamin D supplements or receive an inactive placebo for one year."

Sme of us pasty people have to decode between vitamin D deficiency or chronic sunburn.

Seriously, even 15 minutes in the sun can lead to a burn for me.

I get enough sun but my body isn't using it properly apparently. So I have to take a supplement for Vit. D. I too get RED all the time - rarely ever do I get a "tan". I found a tan creme that seems to do a good job, doesn't stink (as most self-tanners do), and seems to dry fast enough that it doesn't stain your clothes - so I use that to get my tan. I have to use it frequently because being so hot this time of year, I sweat a lot when I work outside with the critters, so I take at least 2 to 3 showers a day which washes off the "tan" faster.

Studies: Low vitamin D levels contribute to disease risk

Saw this in the news so am adding it to this prior thread like a good forumite would .....

"WASHINGTON -- A little extra time in the sun could help reduce the likelihood of contracting some diseases, according to new research.

People with low vitamin D levels are more likely to die from cancer and suffer from other illnesses, according to two studies published Tuesday, The New York Times reports. "

Yeah, I said that at the beginning of this thread. Dr told me as little as 15 minutes a day in the sun with sleeves rolled up is generally enough. And mentioned that Vit D deficiency can lead to cancer, which I find believable, since I was Vit D deficient, tired all of the time and had a cancerous colon polyp removed not long after I found out I was low on Vit. D.
Trouble remembering to take your once a week pill? Set up and alarm on your phone to go off once a week. ;)
