Mother of the groom dress

My son is getting married in September and it's an afternoon wedding. What should I wear??? All these MOTB dresses are so dowdy and matronly, or are more appropriate for an evening wedding.

The first is a great dress but isn't suitable for a day wedding.

The second is an example of how hideous mothers are apparently supposed to look on their kids' wedding day.

It is a formal wedding so shorts and a t-shirt are out. Any ideas? :ohwell:

How about a sexy, stylish suit

My sister's in the same predicament, vrai. Her oldest son is getting married next month in an afternoon wedding and she's having a heck of a time finding a dress that is appropriate. :ohwell:

I'll check with her and see if she's actually found a dress yet and if so, where she got it from.

That's pretty but "sexy" isn't a word I want to conjour up at my son's wedding - at least not in connection with me. :twitch:

See, that's the problem. Jess' mom is the matronly type, so she'll get a style like #2 above and look fantastic.

I'm not the matronly type. I'm not the elegant type. I'm not the frilly type. I'm the L.L. Bean type - and they don't make formal wear. :ohwell:

I think I should have phrased that differently. I know what you mean about not being frilly, elegant or matronly. Suits do well for me as they allow me the femininity (Mother-of-the-Groom for you) yet the comfortability of the structure I like and know so well (no frilly) to be confident.. I meant self-assured more than sexy, I think...

Anyhoo... Opinion, as usual.

That's me!!!! I think you're right and I'll probably go with a formal pantsuit rather than a dress. It was the VS that threw me off.

My sister's future in-law is the same way. Very matronly and that dress would look fantastic on her, but on my sister it would be hideous.

My sister is like you. She's most comfortable in jeans and a pullover or the nurse's scrubs she wears all day, so casual is definitely it. She also refuses to drive a 4-door car because it isn't "cool" and would make her feel "old."

Never understood why people get so worked up about weddings, I mean half of them end in divorce anyway.

Generally there is a color scheme. God forbid you would wear the same color as the mother of the bride or any of the bridesmaids. My son's wedding was 4:30 in the afternoon in November. I wore a sleeveless black velvet gown with a really nice light and airy shawl thingy. It is beautiful. Very simple but elegant and I dressed it up with some pretty jewelry. I got a lot of compliments. I was NOT wearing one of those stupid 2 piece MOTHER dresses. Maybe I can get a picture of it and show it to you..and you are welcome it if it would work for you. I only wore it once.

That sounds pretty, catt, and something my sister would wear. I'd love to see a picture of it.

The bridesmaids in my nephew's wedding are going to be wearing Pepto-Bismol pink dresses. :twitch:

I liked the blue. The blue just kinda speaks wedding, all happy and joyous and all that crap. The black looks more like evening out type thing. Just my two cents.

I wonder why the Pepto-Bismol Pink color was ever created for weddings??? :barf:

Its the last big warning sign to the groom... "Run! Run fast! Run hard! She is a pepto pink kind of girl! Do you know what the hell your house is going to look like for the rest of your f'ing life?!"

:lmao:

Catt, I'd like to see a pic of that dress if you have one. :yay: I'm probably going to go with a dressy pantsuit like VV suggested, more tailored than flowing, in a light color of some form. I'm thinking a beige or champagne. The bridesmaids will be in deep red - it's going to be a beautiful wedding. :sniffsniff:

This is why everyone should get married at one of the hedonism clubs. People just fret too much over what to wear :ohwell:

I can't imagine being nekkid at my daughters wedding. :lmao:
