See, that's the problem. Jess' mom is the matronly type, so she'll get a style like #2 above and look fantastic.
I'm not the matronly type. I'm not the elegant type. I'm not the frilly type. I'm the L.L. Bean type - and they don't make formal wear.
Somebody lied to me. 
Listen, not like I am one to talk fashion, but I would look at the semi-formal suits out there, in silk and other such "fancy" fabrics and wear something that you are comfortable yet chic in and set your own style trend instead of following tradition with something you are gonna hate yourself in. JMO
