I rode through there 3 times.. no traffic.. everyone went through the back way behind food lion and around.. It wasn't a different accident was it?

:bawl: How awful that your son saw it :( How horrible for the man on the bike. Did the SUV driver stick around?

I think that the accident was on 4 at Sweetwater, where you go to the dump.

Well maybe not, my daughter said that she heard it was by food lion too. I read over on the baynet that it was 4 and sweetwater road.

This is the exact same story that I was told, they said the bike ran over his head, everytime he tried to open his mouth they saw blood come out. I did hear on the scanner that he was flown out as a priority 1 to PG Shock. Also, the person in the vehicle was able to drive away, one tow truck and that was for the motorcycle which was going to the impound lot for further investigation.

That's awful... And it could have all been avoided had some bonehead not been in such a hurry... :bawl:

If the bike rear ended the car, the bonehead in a hurry was on two wheels.
If he was wearing a stylish half helmet or non DOT salad bowl, the bonehead was on two wheels.

Like Bob said, you gotta dress for the crash, not the ride

I'm in Saint Marys but I heard 79 (Hollywood rescue squad) dispatched and get patched into Calvert.
I also heard command or someone talking to the Trooper ( I believe it was Trooper 2)
At that time the pt. had an open skull fracture and could not maintain his own airway.
79 got put in service, only the one patient I believe.

I do wonder about the type of helmet worn. Could be that no helmet could have helped. But it could be a better helmet could have.

I heard, again by a witness that was there said he believed the car in front of the motorcycle swerved to avoid hitting another car, when doing this the motorcycle had to get out of their way and almost made it but clipped the car causing him to go down and the bike ran over him. I have no way of knowing if this is true because I wasn't there until the end.

When I was there the medic unit returned to the scene giving the helmet to the police officers. Don't know the proper "type" but it was one of the "half" helmets????, itdidn't cover his fac e, maybe just the top portion of his head to his ears.

Shame.. Chances are, by the time he hit the pavement his helmet probably wasn't on his head.

If the rider was wearing one of those skull-pots or faux-Nazi army helmets, would this instance be a contender for a Darwin award? I could never understand why the State Police don't cite riders driving with those fancy-but-useless helmets? It's especially bad if the driver is wearing a good helmet but his GIB is wearing one of those skull-pots.

See, heres the issue. Maryland, as I understand it, has a sort of vague law, which says this, bolding mine..

"An individual may not operate or ride on a motorcycle unless the individual is wearing protective headgear that meets the standards established by the Administrator. . . ."

So, where do you find these standards? Or a list of approved helmets? You don't, really, because if you track this back to the relevant section, you get this....

"The Administrator:

"(1) May approve or disapprove protective headgear and eye-protective devices required by this section;

"(2) May adopt and enforce regulations establishing standards and specifications for the approval of protective headgear and eye-protective devices; and

"(3) Shall publish lists of all protective headgear and eye-protective devices that he approves, by name and type."

But thats it. But even if they did, most likely it would just say the helmet must DOT, or Snell. And neither of those standards do anything about the style of the helmet. It simply tests the impact resistance of what there is.

Me, I dont approve of helmet laws, not for adults, but if you must have one, at least make it clear. Of course, I wont wear any less than a full face myself, but that's my choice.

Let's just go ahead and open the whole can of worms, shall we?

If it is the states responsibility to mico manage your helmet, then what isn't the states business?

Car drivers would be MUCH safer in a crash wearing a full face and approved helmet. Shall we force them to do so?

How many suffered severed head trauma or death in a car last year? How many on bikes?

Where is the greater good?

Hell Yeah! A six point harness and a HANS device would look cool!

And you would be exponentially safer! Dale would be with us today if only Maryland ran NASCAR. Of course, if Maryland was in charge of NASCAR, there'd be no NASCAR so, the point stands but, not for the right reasons.

It's ILLEGAL to wear a helmet while operating a car in MD

Rider is healing

Rider is a coworker of mine. He's still in the hospital but recovering. Ea an experienced rider that was unable to avoid the emergency stop that occurrd in front of him. He will make a full recovery.

Glad to hear he's recovering.

That speaks to either a following distance that was too close, or not leaving himself a "bolt hole" to go to. If there is a place for someone to cut off the driver in front of you, you have to prepare for that driver to slam on the brakes. Even if there is no place for someone to cut them off, drivers are like squirrels, they just do random stuff. It comes under the "What am I going to do when it all goes to crap RIGHT NOW" heading.
