"ScienceDaily (Dec. 1, 2010) — New research using a world leading motorcycle simulator to analyse rider behaviour has proved that safer doesn't necessarily mean slower and that formal advanced training for bikers can demonstrate improved safety on our roads.

The study was carried out by researchers at The University of Nottingham's Centre for Motorcycle Ergonomics & Rider Human Factors. The preliminary results of the research are published November 30 by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) which funded the research."

They go on to state that motorcycles are over-represented in accident statistics (as the cause of). I totally concur as I've known of many collisions that occurred due to the car/truck driver not SEEING the motorcycle, and cutting across their path.

They didn't need to research that. Aps has been telling us that for years.

Love this line...

Car drivers typically cause two out of the three most common motorcycle accidents in the UK, but a significant number of accidents are still caused by the riders themselves.

Yes, 33% is significant. But the fact that %66 of them are caused by drivers says a lot. Like I have always said. Not assuming they (car drivers) are evil demons bent on your death is a sucker bet, which you will lose eventually.

Larry Gude

Strung Out
Whilst experience seems to help develop rider skills to an extent, advanced training appears to develop deeper levels of awareness, perception and responsibility. It also appears to make riders better urban riders and quicker, smoother and safer riders in rural settings."

Two points; I love it when people say 'whilst' and :buddies: to the rest of that paragraph.

A unique approach was designed to find out whether or not riders with advanced training, ride differently to novice or experienced riders who don't have an advanced qualification.

Gee golly. Whilst they were preparing the study, I wonder what their hypothesis was???

The findings showed that experience on its own does not make riders safer on the road and in some cases the experienced riders behaved more like the novice riders. Advanced riders used better road positioning to anticipate and respond to hazards, kept to urban speed limits, and actually made better progress through bends than riders without the formal advanced training.

More :buddies:

Whilst we're on the subject of advanced training, President Gude would make advanced training for riders mandatory on an annual basis to keep riders sharp and out of bad habits.

President Gude would make advanced training for cagers a monthly requirement.

Advanced training yielding better performance. Who'da thunk it???

Yep. Those folks I just left in the dust back at the light? None of them are going to hit me.

I was driving home with the boy last night and a car pulled up next to us. I told the boy to watch him, he's going to cut over to the right lane and haul ass around the car in front of him.
He did and boy asked how I knew that.
I told him that I knew what he's do based on what I'd seen in the rear view mirror and that's what kept me alive while riding a bike

Northbound 235
I'm in the far left (turning at the next light), Speedy was in the center.
Far right pulled even with the car in front of him and he cut over to the accel/decel lane and punched it to zip around the block and arrived at the light 1 car length ahead

I saw someone make a left from N 235 onto Chancellors from the center travel lane. That means he had to beat the car to his left who was heading straight and the guy in the left turn lane!

Must have been the same guy I saw do the same thing in the same place.
