jewish heritage is passed through the mother, so if your mom is then you are, and if she isn't then you aren't, least thats the way i understand it.

And i am pretty sure it is fatty:

My stepmother's religion is Jewish. Her family is from Germany, which makes her German. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't race determined by where your family is from? She is Jewish just like my stepfather is Catholic. Both of them are religions. Neither a race.
Jewish is actually a religion and a race, and as i said, i believe that it is the jewish custom to determine it through the mother's bloodlines.

and its definately not where your family is from, otherwise we would have races like south american, german, and korean, when in reality it would be more like black, caucasion, and asain

Bloodline really has nothing to do with it. Like every other religion, it is a life choice. I could convert today even though neither of my biological parents are Jewish. Right?

Jews (Hebrew: יהודים, Yehudim) are followers of Judaism or, more generally, members of the Jewish people (also known as the Jewish nation, or the Children of Israel), an ethno-religious group descended from the ancient Israelites and from converts who joined their religion. The term also includes those who have undergone an officially recognized formal process of religious conversion to Judaism.
With Judaism, from what I understand, it isn't 100% about religion, but also about heritage.

Interesting to see where this post has gone...

Judaism can be both a religion and a culture--depending on who you talk you, Jews themselves tend to give different answers. Here is mine:

Judaism goes through the mother's bloodline...so if your mother is Jewish, you are born Jewish. You could do nothing else religiously Jewish in your life, but you would be considered a Jewish person. If your father is Jewish and your mother is not, you will not be born Jewish, but you can be converted either as a child, or by your own choice as an adult. Once you convert, you are considered to have been born Jewish--a convert is no different than a person who is Jewish by birth.

You could be an African-Jew or a Korean-Jew or a Russian-Jew or a California-Jew...or whatever nationality you happen to be. So, in that sense, its a religion and not a heritage.

But, because of what the religion requires, there are some things that Jews all over the world share in common, for instance a language (Hebrew), and some rituals (which include foods that you do and dont eat, holidays, days of rest, etc.) and when you put all those things together--you end up with a bit of a culture.

Jewish is NOT a RACE, it's an ethnicity.
German is not a race, it's an ethnicity.
Catholic is not a race, it's a religous denomination.
Black/white/asian/hispanic/native american IS a race.

Thus, you can be a black (race) German (ethnicity) male (sex) who's mother is a Jew (ethnicity) who is a practicing catholic. You would be a Jewish Black German, who is a catholic. If said male then married a caucasian female of non-jewish heritage, and they had kids, the kids would NOT be Jewish due to jewish ethnicity being a maternal thing.

I believe ethnicity is also an appropriate term. Based on ancestoral origins. I.e. you are an American by change of citizenship, but born and raised in Ireland. Thus you are an American by nationality, but Irish by ethnicity. That's my line of thought. I may be wrong though.

Have you ever been told that you're as dumb as a box of rocks? Because that would be a lot more accurate.
