STFU azzhole. You have no idea what the circumstances were!

Neither do you pinko bunny!!
I know that road and that curve!

And I bet speed, texting, talking, goofing off and/or not paying attention was the cause.
Otherwise, there should have been no reason for an accident!

I really feel for the parents...but this accident won't change a thing and kids will still die on So. Md roads.

You have no respect! Don't you think it may be a little too soon to be spouting off with your theories?

You're a dick!

Yup, I have one, I heard bunnies have very tiny ones.

But the point is, like other tragic traffic deaths, this one will not change the fact that kids die in cars on the roads in So. Maryland! Heck, in the US for that matter.

Change has to begin at HOME and not on the roads!
This should be a time when parents sit with their kids and talk about this horrible accident and how they can really learn from it.

We are not in the cars with them, we can only teach and encourage them to use caution at all times!

I do have respect, but I also have experience and knowledge, which it seems you lack.

Take care bunny boy!

Yes we do.
She did something other than drive and crossed the center line.

Has to be tragic and devastating for the family. My prayers go out to them

Point being, we don't know if an animal darted in the road or if she was avoiding a collision with something else.... Even with an experienced driver that would be a difficult situation to navigate.

Sadly the kids today can't read, but they can text and talk while driving!!! I see it all the time and the adults are just as bad!

If they had followed the rules of the road and the POSTED SPEED LIMIT...there would have been NO accident, nor death of a child!

Sorry for the families and the survivors. Perhaps this accident will impress on the others to drive as directed and live to a ripe old age!

There is a reason for those lines, speed limits and other laws kids think are silly and does not apply to them.

Prayers for the families.

Unless you were in the car with them, you should not be quick to judge! You have NO IDEA what the circumstances were that caused this accident!!!!!! It could have been an animal, it could have been a medical emergency....you have NO CLUE!!!!!!

Now IS NOT the time to even speculate on what YOU THINK caused this accident. Someone lost a daughter, sister, friend, student, etc. and others are in critical condition. ALL that is needed right now is prayers and strength for this poor family!

This is my friends daughters. I have watched them grow up and am aware of the circumstances surrounding the accident. My suggestion is to not make assumptions of the fact that she was speeding, texting or goofing off. People are known to have circumstances that cause these accidents including medical emergencies. The official report will eventually tell the truth. Until then, please just pray for their family. The mother of these girls is a wonderful mother and if you knew these kids, you would agree she did a great job raising them. So as she plans a funeral for one daughter, prays the other one survives and tries to juggle 2 girls in 2 different hospitals - keep the prayers coming and negative assumptions to yourself. We can use it as a learning experience for all - pay attention to everyone driving around you

Community won't do a darn thing....It is not the roads fault!

We as adults need to be better examples of what a safe driver is and impress on our "immature" children to do the same!

Bless your heart, no one ever said it was the "road's fault". My family members drive that road frequently, as do most people who live in the Twin Beach area. That section of the road is winding, has no berms, and has driveways/housing development roads opening onto it. The speed limit (I believe) is 40 mph. There are some people who don't obey the speed limit as it currently is posted. There are many, many accidents on that road.

My comment concerning the community doing something was a suggestion that those of us who use this road frequently, not only pay more attention (which should go without saying), but also start making some waves locally with Highway Safety and Law enforcement folks, suggesting that traffic conditions on this road get a serious look. As the population in the Beaches has increased, and the retail development in Dunkirk has increased, this road is getting much increased traffic as a preferred route. The road was not designed to carry the amount of traffic that is using it. Not only should design and capacity be looked at but also traffic enforcement. We are losing too many people to accidents. A traffic enforcement effort would help short-term (at least as far as a "reminder" about what the laws are on that road), but long-term solutions should also be sought.

Of course, none of this will help the family today, but it just might save someone else the same heartache at some point in the future.

And yes, my child and I spent our drive home discussing "safe" driving practices and places to watch out for and pay special attention to when driving. We do this whenever I drive him somewhere. My Dad did it for me and it definitely helped me out during my years of driving.

It's nice that you are so compassionate to this family who has suffered an unimaginable loss. They will FOREVER be impacted by this loss.

I know you have a beef about the driving habits of folks in the area, which is mostly true, do you really have to be a jack wad right now? Seriously?

I have lived in my current home right off of Mt. Harmony for 4 years now. In that time I have seen several accidents at the intersection of my neighborhood and Mt. Harmony, and at the intersection of Mt. Harmony and Rte. 2. My daughter was rear ended at the light on Rte. 2 as she waited to make a left hand turn onto Mt. Harmony. Some of her friends were also involved in an accident at that intersection.

After my daughters accident, I started sending emails to County and SHA officials until I got some response. Here is a letter I received back in October of 2012 in response to me asking if something could be done about the timing of the light on Rte. 2 at Mt. Harmony. I figure if anyone wants a name of someone to start writing letters to with concerns about Mt. Harmony Road, you can start with the person who responded back to me.

**To date, nothing has been done with the intersection**

Here is the letter:

Dear Ms. XXXXXXX

This is a follow-up response to your request to split phase MD 2 at the MD 2 and Mt. Harmony Road intersection in Calvert County. The State Highway Administration (SHA) appreciates your interest and shares your concern for roadway safety. We have completed our review and would like to share the results with you.

Split phasing, providing separate green signal phases for opposing approaches, may be implemented to address safety concerns when a heavy through movement opposes a heavy left turn movement, as is the case with Mt. Harmony Road at the subject intersection. One detriment to providing split phasing operation is that less green time can be allocated to each movement at the intersection as adding an additional phase to the signal cycle means introducing additional amber and red time. This can result in major operational issues in situations where heavy through movements are present, such as along MD 2, as inadequate green time will result in queues and delays at the intersection. When this happens there is increased risk of rear end collisions and aggressive driving behaviors.

The SHA uses Critical Lane Volume (CLV) analysis to evaluate how changes in phasing and/or lane assignment will effect overall intersection operations. The results of a CLV analysis with split phasing along MD 2 revealed that the level of service would decline to an unacceptably low level. Additionally, a review of a three year accident history did not reveal any safety concerns between the opposing MD 2 through and left turn movements. Therefore, we are unable to provide split phasing along MD 2 at the subject intersection. However, please be advised that the SHA is moving forward with a project to widen MD 2 to provide separate left turn, through, and right turn lanes along both MD 2 approaches at this intersection. It is anticipated that the addition of these left turn lanes will improve operations and safety at the subject intersection. For more information about this project, please contact Ms. Debra Russell at 410-841-1079.

Thank you again for your e-mail. If you have any questions or additional comments, please do not hesitate to contact me or Mr. Greg Phillips, Transportation Engineer Manager for Southern Maryland, via e-mail or phone at the number provided below.

Sincerely,
Michelle Vrikkis, P.E.

Had to go by there today. It is a bad turn if you're speeding or distracted.

The reconstruction has the westbound car going straight into the opposing lane just at the beginning of the turn.

My heart goes out to this family, what a complete nightmare! I hope the other daughter pulls through 100%. I can't imagine planning a funeral for one daughter while praying for my other daughters to recover, especially with one being in such bad shape.

And I really can't stand when people feel the need to assume what happened. If you weren't there when the accident took place, and you haven't spoken with the other family members who were in the car at the time, then you don't know what happened. Assumptions help no one.

I agree. Whatever the cause, it is unbelieveably sad for everyone involved. My thoughts and prayers go out to this family.
