I just bought my German Shepard little girl a pretty toybox for her toys and she started chewing on it last night. She thinks if she gets rid of the box I wont make her put her toys away.
Ours did that, too. I haven't taught them this, but they tend to keep their toys close together when they play with them. Might be some kind of territorial instinct.
The one thing they do love is, squeaky toys - but once they get one, the objective then becomes to tear the "squeaky" out of the toy. They locate the part that squeaks, and rip at the toy until they can get it out. Once that happens, they lose interest in the toy - as if, they've effectively killed it.
I thought rope toys would keep them occupied, but they have since learned how to untie the ends - they hold it down with their paws and nibble at the end of the rope until it comes loose - and it's just a matter of time before they unravel and shred the remaining rope pieces.
I guess nothing works quite like good ol' sticks.
