My dog is suffering from a tick bite

My dog got bitten by a big old tick the other day and now she is breaking out in these oozing spots of eczema or something. Yesterday I cleaned them while bathing her and put bacsitracin on them. I want to shave the spots and keep applying the anti-bacterial but the fur gets matted real bad and I cant clip it. Not to mention she gets scared and fights me (she's about 60lbs.).

Should I take her to the vet? Its been a few years since she's been to one and I won't go back to the previous one because of poor customer service. I also can't afford a hefty bill either because I know she will probably need heartworm meds and probably a shot or two.

Suggestions?

Sounds like you should give the dog to someone who can afford to take care of it. JMHO.

I agree with mAlice. the dog should be on heartworm preventative etc. they probably will want to do a test to see if he/she has heartworms and do other bloodwork to make sure all is ok. then they will give him/her shots. if you can't afford to take an animal to the vet yearly for shots and checkups etc then you shouldn't be a pet owner in my opinion. Responsible owners take care of there animals health and if they don't like one vet will go to another not wait years to go like you have.

Take her to the Well Pet Clinic (301)866-0303 and have her checked out.

A little harsh but a true statement. You wouldn't have this problem if your dog was on the appropriate preventitive medicine. I cannot believe that in this day and age people still own dogs and NEVER take them to a vet....would you have a child and never take him/her to the doctor? Cmon, be a responsible pet owner or don't own a pet.

I think it happens because people don't realize how expensive yearly preventative is per dog. Last well baby visit for both of my pooches left me with a $800 bill.

Probably so but they need to educate themselves prior to....but it will never change.

This is why pet insurance is a good thing. Those little guys can rack up big bills.

Humble...right. Not what I asked.

Anyway, I take care of her pretty darn well.

And yes I have been slacking on the shots the last three years, but I also know she is not exposed to other dogs (she stays inside or in my fenced in yard). She doesn't often get ticks or other bites.

So any advice(other than jackass remarks) are appreciated.

If you weren't wrong you wouldn't be so defensive.

We have a TON of sick ticks in our area. She very likely now has a blood-borne disease... if so, you can't fix it on your own and she will get very sick and most likely die in great pain and suffering. Get her checked by a vet.

My dog got oozing spots localized to her head and face. She looked terrible. They turned black and scabbed over and eventually went away. I took her to two different vets and each said it was a different thing. I did not use any of the medicine they gave me and the oozing sores cleared up on their own.

I am wrong for not taking her to the vet regularly. I admit it.

But that doesn't solve my problem.

And thanks to the person who mentioned the Well Pet Clinic, I had forgotten about that place.

Glad you admit that, read the above post, most important right now is taking care of your dog....NOW!

I am. I'm getting ready to call Companion Care in Mechanicsville since that's closest to me.

JMHO = does not necessarily mean humble opinion. I tend to use it as "Just my honest opinion." Don't take offense, take action for your beloved family member's health.

Get pet insurance ASAP before they give you a high rate for pre-existing conditions (this tick bite could leave him or her with Lyme disease). There is usually a ten day waiting period before you can make a claim, so that people don't take advantage of their service, as with human insurance.

Take out a loan if you have to, or use your emergency credit card. Ask them to boost your limit if it's not enough. It'll help boost your credit and you'll be able to get your dog better. Next time around you'll have the insurance to reimburse you. $100/year is better than $1000 out of pocket.

All Kinds Veterinary Hospital in Callaway is a wonderful place. They're very thoughtful and friendly, and take as long as you need to answer all your questions.

Also I have pulled four ticks from her already this year, and two from myself. I think of them as Democrats.
