My dog is suffering from a tick bite

Hey Zguy...just an idea for future shots/heartworm tests..LuvMyPet is a mobile vet that goes to Petco in California and Waldorf at least once a month. You can get vaccinations/heartworm test/heartworm meds/flea and tick preventative. You arrive at the designated time and wait in line. We get there early and usually do not have to wait long. The prices are very afforable. We also have a local vet for emergencies or services not provided by LuvMyPet. We just make sure to give our local vet copies of the shot records from LuvMyPet so that they know the dogs are current on everything. Check out the website because they have their price list for vaccinations.

Pet Vaccinations: Dog Vaccines, Cat Vaccines at Luv My Pet - Petco
Thank you! I will bookmark that!

That sounds pretty high for the HW and tick stuff. :eyebrow: I just got a year's worth of Interceptor for Scooter and it was only $68. I got a 4 month supply of Advantage that will treat the dog and 3 cats for all 4 months, and it was $38. Have you tried looking online to see if you can get it cheaper? Sounds like your vet is too expensive.

The blood work also included titer testing for some antibodies rather than blind vaccination for all.

I used to get the low cost stuff you mentioned too, but found though it killed ticks when they bit, it did not prevent the dogs from carrying ticks indoors. I did some research and decided to try something different that would also give the benefit of repelling pests... I'm using Bayer K9 Advantix flea, tick and mosquito control for good pet health now... it's more expensive, but if it truly repels then it's well worth it... I'll find out in a couple weeks when tick season starts hot and heavy again.

I'd be curious to know if and how it'd keep the ticks off the dog. Most meds work by killing the tick when it bites. Let me know how you like it.

And I've tried other flea products...but Advantage has always worked the best for my pets.

zguy -- you can also call the vet and ask if they price match with 1800petmeds or something similar..... my vet does, all I have to do is print out, what it is they say my animal requires and bring up the printed page and they match it. So for instance if its like 120 for a supply of frontline and 1800petmeds is 54 dollars my vet will give it to me for 54.00 but you have to have the printed current page with you.

Good Luck.

Is that better than getting a month for free?

Well, I don't know. If you buy it at your vet, you'd pay the full price but get an extra month's worth. If you bought it online, you'd get $11 off, free shipping, and if you use the coupon code I listed in the other thread, you'd get an extra $5 off. I guess it depends on how much the vet charges for it.

Yep. That is what I do... even when I was using the other stuff. I found the convenience of doing all the doggie stuff at once was way more valuable to me than the very few dollars I'd save ordering it online... but I do check every year to see of for some reason the cost savings will suddenly outweigh the benefits of convenience.

My dog got bitten by a big old tick the other day and now she is breaking out in these oozing spots of eczema or something. Yesterday I cleaned them while bathing her and put bacsitracin on them. I want to shave the spots and keep applying the anti-bacterial but the fur gets matted real bad and I cant clip it. Not to mention she gets scared and fights me (she's about 60lbs.).

Should I take her to the vet? Its been a few years since she's been to one and I won't go back to the previous one because of poor customer service. I also can't afford a hefty bill either because I know she will probably need heartworm meds and probably a shot or two.

Suggestions?

Yes, my son had 2 tick diseases last year and was violently ill. He was hospitalized for 3 days on IV meds.

Petsmart has a day, maybe one per month?? where they will do all needed in a package deal for a very good "cheap" price. If there is one near you, call them. Benfield I think is the name of the vet clinic.

Also I have pulled four ticks from her already this year, and two from myself. I think of them as Democrats.

I pulled one off of our foster pig's arse the other day, must have been Nancy. It was sucking the life out of her!!!!

Well, over 400 dollars later, some shaving on the hot spots, some prednisone and anti-inflammatory, heartworm test and prevention, topical spray, and some special shampoo, my girl is on the mend.

Thanks to the folks who offered good advice.

And if you need a Vet in the north end of St. Mary's I highly recommend Dr. Donis from Companion Care. She is very professional and her and her staff provided excellent customer service and were very friendly.

Oh she ain't too happy...yet. Especially when I have to spray those raw spots with that topical spray that has isopropyl alcohol in it.

The meds are making her kind of lethargic too, not to mention I think the shaving has embarrassed her a little.

How in the world did your Boxer break both front legs? My Malamute ate two socks (she passed one of them and the other got stuck) and the vet and surgery cost over $3000.
