Good news. My dog's tests all came back negative. No Lyme, Heartworms, or any other bloodborne stuff.

Just the skin issues.

Just a quick question. I have been reading a lot on how some studies show that all these shots for dogs are doing them more harm than good and a rabbi shot is all you really need. Any thoughts?

Shalom.

But seriously, you need to do more research if you think a rabies shot is all you need. Puppies need shots. Talk to your vet and do more research.

my vet recommends rabies and distemper for dogs and also the one shot for lymes borditella (sp) and another one i can't remember which one it was but also bruno is a puppy and she wants her safeguarded against getting kennel cough and lymes disease. She also gave one for drinking out of rain puddles etc for the chance that a raccoon drank out of it.

We have a TON of sick ticks in our area. She very likely now has a blood-borne disease... if so, you can't fix it on your own and she will get very sick and most likely die in great pain and suffering. Get her checked by a vet.

PAIN and SUFFERING....the ultimate buzz words for all the animal rights activists in the world.

Listen toots. My dog is 6 or so. She better stay healthy because any vet bill over......i don't know $500 let's say and she will be getting treated with a quick painless death. Don't get me wrong i love her...just not that much.

Animal activists.....so out of touch with reality.

Seems you are probably talking about the leptospirosis vaccination...

Leptospirosis is transmitted between animals through contact with infected urine; venereal and placental transfer; bite wounds; or the ingestion of infected tissue. Indirect transmission occurs through exposure of susceptible animals to contaminated water sources, food, or even bedding. Stagnant or slow moving water provides a suitable habitat for Leptospira.

So the raccoon you were mentioning could have say peed in a puddle, then your dog walked through it, came in the house, licked his paws clean and ultimately licked the bacteria also. it's sometimes contained in the 1 year distemper vaccine but you would have to check with your vet, you can have it as a seperate vaccine along with the 3 year distemper. There is alot of controversy nowadays as whether to vaccinate or not to vaccinate and that could open up a whole new thread with conversations that would go on for a long time!

also, to the person with the boxer puppy in casts! your pup is so cute and im so sorry he seems to have such an unfortunate injury! i myself have 2 boxers, one of which just recently had surgery. I don't know about yours but mine are big babies! I hope he recovers well, what happened to him to break both legs?! Poor baby!

yes Leptospirosis is the vaccination I am talking about. We have plenty of wild animals around where I live and the vet wanted her safeguarded against it.

I already told my mom I would do anything I could for the dog even if she gets hurt I will spend up to I think 3,000.00 on her but no more than that I don't think unless it was a surgery that she had to have to save her life but if it required a lot of pain and suffering I might just put her to sleep. Bruno is only a puppy and I want her to live a nice long and happy life with me and my mom and stepdad. Bruno is the most spoiled dog you will ever meet too. She loves kids and she loves most adults except for ones with a lot of facial hair (men with beards or men that show signs of being afraid of her as she is a large breed dog) she does fine with ladies and she loves babies and children too.

Also I have pulled four ticks from her already this year, and two from myself. I think of them as Democrats.

:killingme This just gave me a much needed laugh.

I haven't read the entire thread yet but I hope that your dog got some much needed care.

We are planning on getting a dog in about a year or so (we are moving to a place with a fenced yard early next year and will get one then) - can someone tell me more about 'pet insurance' My cocker spaniel passed away a few years ago from lymphoma and pet insurance was just getting popular then - goodness knows I would have loved to had it, I know we spent 10K in his last two years of life trying to battle it, having tumors removed, etc. before he started failing and we had to have him put down. :frown: I'd love to get insurance for our next pooch. Hopefully we'll never have to use it, but like med. insurance for people, you just never know.

Is it something where you pay for the treatment up front and then get reimbursed, or are there actually vets that 'take' the insurance and then you are just responsible for a co-pay or whatever the insurance does not pay directly to them?

Sorry to hijack the thread but TIA for any advice/information :howdy:

I volunteer with Second Hope Rescue and with the micro chipping we do for our rescues, they offer 30 days pet insurance for $1 to try it out!! What a great deal in case it is ever needed. I have heard positive things about the insurance coverage!!! Check out our site when you are ready to add a pup to your family!!

My dog got bitten by a big old tick the other day and now she is breaking out in these oozing spots of eczema or something. Yesterday I cleaned them while bathing her and put bacsitracin on them. I want to shave the spots and keep applying the anti-bacterial but the fur gets matted real bad and I cant clip it. Not to mention she gets scared and fights me (she's about 60lbs.).

Should I take her to the vet? Its been a few years since she's been to one and I won't go back to the previous one because of poor customer service. I also can't afford a hefty bill either because I know she will probably need heartworm meds and probably a shot or two.

Suggestions?

I recommend white plains animal clinic. I hope your dog gets better :)
