My picky eater is in the hospital

:huggy: I know what you are going through. My girl has been in the hospital since monday. She has autoimmune disease and had to have an emergncy blood transfusion. I hope your baby gets better.

At some point, I'm going to have to say she's 11 years old, I love her and whatever happens is in God's hands, because there IS a limit - because at some point I'm going to be forking over $1k to hear there's nothing they can do for her and I'm going to wonder why didn't you tell me that at $200 when it was an office visit and bloodwork? I'm so conflicted about this.

:huggy: for you both.

She stopped eating completely. Tests on Monday showed that she has pancreatitis; xrays show a small liver. No signs of any big tumors or anything. She was very jaundiced and also dehydrated. Today, she still wont eat for them, so they're keeping her another night. I dropped a blanket off for her, as I knew she had to be miserable in a cold empty cage. :(

Treatment for pancreatitis in humans is NO food or water by mouth for several days/weeks.. the only liquid/ nutrient is through IV or PIC..

I would assume the same for dogs/cats, but they're smart enough to make the connection to not eat.

and you are correct!!!!!

I have seen cases so bad ... that the dog did pass away due to it... but also had a few other issues.

THERE SHOULD BE NO EATING AROUND THESE CASES... no eating in the back at all as the dogs have a better sniffer and the smell of food makes them sick.

Slotpuppy, I hope your pup gets well fast, too. My dog was diagnosed with autoimmune disease a couple of years ago and she responded very quickly to steroids; but it sounds like your pup's condition is a little more serious. I also suspect that maybe my dog was misdiagnosed; when her symptoms cleared up, she was fine for awhile and then had a second bout that was diagnosed as flea allergy by a different vet in the office - and giving her a better flea treatment (the vet said that Frontline no longer worked, especially in our area) cleared it up faster (and cheaper) than the steroids did, once I paid for bloodwork.

Frankly, I'm beginning to think that diagnosing our dogs is a crapshoot. My dog's been in the hospital since Monday and she's there at least until tomorrow. Dangit, that's longer than I was in the hospital for a double bypass operation, and she's still just barely eating. Age was a big factor in our decision to treat her. She is only 5 so we wanted to give her a fighting chance. If it was my 12 beagle who can barley get around anymore and does nothing but sleep, I think our decision would have been different.

Are you allowed to bring food from home? My girl was not eating either till we brought in some of her food from home and that seemed to get her appetite going.

nnnooooooooo
.... pancreatitis dogs need a special diet....

usually its human food or/and foods high in fat that causes this.

Last winter when we went through her period of picky eating, I did cut all grains from her diet. I couldn't believe the difference in her coat - she looked so good! But then she started getting picky about all the no grain brands and started devouring Beneful (the kind in the one serving packs of moist food). I saw almost immediately the return to a less shiny coat, but my main focus was on making sure she was eating.

And yes, they've been doing IV fluids. I'm surprised they hand fed her; because I agree with you - from what I've read - she'll know when she feels good enough to eat. A friend gave me a liver cleansing diet for dogs that I'm going to show the doctor and ask if that's what she should be on when she gets home.

They let my girl come home last night. She is doing better but has a long way to go. We have 4 different pills she takes twice a day.

I hope they let your baby come home soon, a house is not the same without the pets around. :huggy:

I've been crying most of the afternoon. She's not doing well at all. They're trying a last steroid on her today; not much more they can do. She still is very jaundiced. They let me go see her today to try to feed her. She buried her head in my shirt as best she could with that collar on her head and started talking to me (it's not quite a whine, but some sort of verbalization that we've always done when I come home from work). She wouldn't eat when I tried to hand feed her and I had to leave when she became very adamant that I get her out of the doggy jail and take her home. The vet said we probably need to make a decision in the next day or two. :(

I am so sorry. :huggy: Will they let you take her home for a bit to see if maybe she is depressed being in jail. Either way I know this is very hard on you. Your family is in my thoughts.

I think what Prep said might be a good idea. See if you can bring her home. Sometimes, Home is the best medicine. I wish I could help you ACD. I'll be thinking of you today.

I think we've decided to hear what the vet has to say tomorrow and then we're going to bring her home. I think you all may be right that she might eat in her own environment. She's never been crated, except for one afternoon and she hated it.
Thank you all so much for your understanding and support. It has been a great help. :huggy:

:huggy: So sorry for you. I know how hard it must be to watch and not be able to do anything to help. I agree, bring her home, even if she doesnt eat, at least she'll be home and surrounded by her family that loves her. Wish I could help in someway.
