My solution to the "Bridge" dilemma!

I was reading the op-ed section in the Southern Maryland Extra insert to this Sunday's Post. I've got a solution to the problem of "jumpers", failing architecture, and the general fear many have of crossing both the Thomas Johnson Bridge in St. Mary's County, and the Harry Nice Bridge in Charles County. STOP BUILDING THE BRIDGES SO BLASTED HIGH!!! We don't have warships coming up the Potomac anymore into DC, and I don't particularly care about having my view of Solomon's island be "asthetically pleasing"! I just want to get over the darn thing without fearing for my life. Funny, but the flat bridge from Benedict (in Charles County) over to Calvert County has worked just fine for years now. Not to mention the extra cost and maintenance of these stratospheric leviathans. Lower the bridge a little, and a lot of your problems would go away (as well as my sweaty palms)!

Had my first trip over on my bike this year. I refused to look left or right going over, but on the way back, I looked around a bit. The view is wonderful. I'd rather it was lower though, as I don't particularly like heights.

Just a reminder. If you go off the Benidect bridge, you'll have time to comtemplate you fate as your car slowly fills with water. Drop off a high one and it's over quick.

Just curious, but do you fear running off the road and into the ditch when you're not on a bridge? Just wondering what the difference is.

I concur, let's not discriminate !
Equal Oppurtunity for jumpers !!

 I'd think it would be much harder to go off either the Nice or Johnson bridges, they have those jersey wall sides designed to keep you car on the road. Benidict just has those low guard rails. Bet your SUV would go right thru them.

They could build a brand new "low bridge" under the existing structure, and keep the high one in place for tourists (walkers) and jumpers. Win-Win situation, and it could be done.

No, but not everyone is OKAY with staring up into the sky just to get over the bridge! The Solomons bridge is a catastrophe waiting to happen, and the Harry Nice bridge at Dahlgren isn't much better. At least IT has a little superstructure at the top, instead of "off we go, into the wild blue yonder"!

This might be a strange concept, but you could always look where you're going.
:lmao: As afraid of heights as I am, I was more comfortable going over on the bike than I am in the car. I have no clue why. Oh, maybe cause I had 1bdz behind me. She's like a comfort blanket when I'm riding.

Have you ever driven over/through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel? It's much better now, but you still have those tunnels with MACK TRUCKS coming right at you. :jameo:

I can't stand high bridges, enclosed spaces or oncoming traffic when there is nowhere to escape. I feel your pain. :huggy:

You would probably have to be going well over 150mph to get airborne enoungh to go over the jersey walls depending who or what you hit, but you are still probably not going to go through them !

I've tried that! Works great, except for the part where the panic attack ensues. :coffee:

Ever consider the total cost of a bridge into your hairbrained budget???

A draw bridge has considerable upkeep, and you have to pay a bridge tender and maintanence crew for the life of the bridge. warships are not the only vessels that require the high overhead cleareance.

As someone from tidewater I have seen the traffic associated with draw bridges. Bridges with low cleareance open about once an hour along the Elizabeth river. These bridges are on major highways like Rt13.

just my thoughts

Never said it should be a drawbridge! Just a little lower, that's all. :coffee:
