I'm scared of meeting someone head on who might think that it's okay to drink and drive.

KAHUNA said:No...I've crossed high bridges in all sorts of vehicles. Result's the same!

If you're not mentally competant, perhaps you shouldn't be controlling a 2 & 1/2 ton block of steel travelling at a mile a minute.KAHUNA said:I've tried that! Works great, except for the part where the panic attack ensues.
Dougstermd said:if its lower it has to be a draw bridge. What part of Maritime commerce do you not understand???
There is a Navy base with a dock just upriver from the bridgeKAHUNA said:That's crap, and you know it! It would have to be a lot lower before that would happen. And by the way, when's the last time you saw a freighter coming up the Patuxent (considering it narrows to a creek in Anne Arundel County!

No, but there are frequently large ships docked thereKAHUNA said:That "Navy Base with a Dock" is the recreation facility...not much use for battleships there!
Dougstermd said:Ever see a Sailboat go up the Patuxent River, A Pile driving crane,a barge of rip rap (or other aggregate) maybe a barge carring the mechanisms that need to be replaced on the draw bridge???
Bridges are not and should not be designed to interfere with Maritime traffic
there are other considerations such as storm surge and currents at the mouth of the river.
KAHUNA said:Right...that's why the bridge was closed for almost two years shortly after opening due to cracking in the foundation. The entire series of support piers are now wrapped in steel to keep the whole thing from coming down! That really inspires my confidence. Hauling barges don't need that kind of height to get under, nor do sailboats. There's simply too many other bridges in this region that allow for most kinds of maritime traffic without being THAT high. That's all I'm saying.

Dougstermd said:can you give me an example of a bridge that is as low as what you would enjoy crossing that does not impede maritime traffic
KAHUNA said:Well, let's see...the South River Bridge in Annapolis, the bridge crossing over the Rappahanock at Port Royal, Virginia, the new Woodrow Wilson Bridge, just to name a few. Actually, I might be able to handle the Thomas Johnson Bridge a bit better if they'd constructed higher Jersey walls, or extended the fencing a little further up.
Xanax works well for bridge crossings.FireBrand said:You seem to be a nice person KAHUNA, but you have no kahunas.
Seems that all logic has failed, next stop.....therapy....

I just scrolled through and did not see anyone mention this, so... even if the state agreed with you this would only affect bridges built henceforth.KAHUNA said:STOP BUILDING THE BRIDGES SO BLASTED HIGH!!!
Did you know that's the only draw bridge on any interstate highwayDougstermd said:The WW is a draw bridge

KAHUNA said:I was reading the op-ed section in the Southern Maryland Extra insert to this Sunday's Post. I've got a solution to the problem of "jumpers", failing architecture, and the general fear many have of crossing both the Thomas Johnson Bridge in St. Mary's County, and the Harry Nice Bridge in Charles County. STOP BUILDING THE BRIDGES SO BLASTED HIGH!!! We don't have warships coming up the Potomac anymore into DC, and I don't particularly care about having my view of Solomon's island be "asthetically pleasing"! I just want to get over the darn thing without fearing for my life. Funny, but the flat bridge from Benedict (in Charles County) over to Calvert County has worked just fine for years now. Not to mention the extra cost and maintenance of these stratospheric leviathans. Lower the bridge a little, and a lot of your problems would go away (as well as my sweaty palms)!
