I've felt all along that North Korea does not have a nuclear weapon and that this has all been a big bluff and this supposed test confirms my opinion for me at least. There has never been a nuclear detonation that was that small. The bombs that were detonated in our west and dropped on Hiroshima were the smallest bombs yet and they were 12+ kilotons each. So assuming that the NKs have infact been stealing and buying plans for nuclear weapons over the past few decades, they would have been getting plans for multi-megaton weapons, not one that's a relative firecracker.

An explosion that appears to be in the 550-800 kiloton range explosion is very well in the realm of accomplishment with conventional explosives, and I would bet that's exactly what North Korea used. Also, note that the North Koreans have been very vocal about how they were able to contain 100% of the radiation from their test explosion. Even the most recent US, Soviet, and French underground tests have yielded some increased radiation, yet the North Koreans are scampering about at the get go claiming they've contained 100% of theirs. The only way they could be that sure there would be no radiation increases detected would be if they knew for sure there would be no radiation to be detected, i.e., they didn't have a nuclear detonation.

When the Soviets, French, Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis, British, and every other nuclear-capable nation detonated a nuclear weapon, above or below ground, we knew it right away. The fact that our intel folks aren't able to immediately confirm that the NKs detonated a nuke shows me that they're pretty sure the detonation was not nuclear and are looking for evidence of what it was.

The easiest way to tell would be to look at the recorded data for the shock wave. TNT has a rising slope, a nuclear explosion has an almost vertical slope.

LMAO I was getting ready to post that.

Let me get this right. They exploded an atomic weapon that was substantialy smaller than the first one we did back in the 40's.

Yeah. The Hiroshima bomb was equal to 12+ kilotons of TNT. The North Korea detonation was 550 to 800 tons. Nuclear weapons have been in the megaton yield range for decades, so I don't see North Korea getting a hold of plans for a nuclear firecracker from anybody.

Once again... the theory of building a nuclear weapon is kid's stuff, but the practice is very, very difficult.

There was a photo of a Japanese seismologist pointing to a screen projection of seismograph printouts that I assume were of the 4.x disturbances of the explosion. Looked like the TNT slopes of which you speak.

Yesterday...

...I started a post about this in order to discuss what their motivation would be to fake this. Were they unsure if we could tell for sure? Was it a dud?

I stopped after about 10 minutes of rolling it around in my head, just too bored with the abject dysfunction of these guys to even bother trying to rationally discuss it.

If this is true, a fake, then the sting of world ridicule and late night jokes is gonna set in quick enough. What then? A 'face saving' attack on he South?

You have a very good point. It isn't wise to laugh at a psycho.

...I didn't say that. :lmao:

An attack of the South would be more of the same. Their preparedness, serviceability, maintenance and supply situation is probably much like their nuke program; when the dust settles, it's a mess.
