N.Y. Senator Pushes For Cameras On Cop Handguns

Ubi bene ibi patria
" ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ― In a flash, a police officer draws a handgun from its holster. Less than two seconds later, a red laser and bright light shine at whatever is in the gun barrel's path while a mini-camera records it all.

That's how mini-cams on police handguns would work under a proposal gaining support in New York, which would be the first state in the nation to require the technology. State police were briefed on the technology and are reviewing it for a possible pilot program, said Michael Balboni, the state's deputy secretary for public safety.

The device could create a critical visual and audio record of police shootings for use in court, said state Sen. Eric Adams, a Brooklyn Democrat and former police officer. He is drumming up support for testing the cameras with the state police SWAT squad."

After the first shot, you aren't going to be able to see anything  How good a quality camera do you think they're going to get on a handgun? It has to be portable (battery powered), small, possibly activated whenever their gun is drawn...this is all wishful thinking IMHO. And, as stated previously, how clear is anything going to be after a shot is fired?

look at this sucker.

tell me that isn't going to influence aim/balance significantly AND/OR make the draw slower/hinder the draw causing the cop to get shot because his gun is caught on this holster

Of course it's going to interfere with shooting, that's the point. They have to protect their constituents

...not an issue. If this camera is as shown in your picture, just another slide rail accessory, it'll likely be not much different from learning to handle your weapon with a light on it.

This is a good idea. When it dawns on everyone just how dynamic a drawn weapon situation is, how volatile, how unpredictable and being able to see the danger for real, then it is more likely that officers will get the more extensive and thorough training they need.

A recording, from several weapons, is just as likely to exonerate as get an officer into trouble. If it helps reduce bad shootings and helps get them more training, I'm all for it.

As long as it doesn't interfere with the officer drawing his weapon.

Personally, I think having teh camera mounted to his HEAD would be a better idea.

Sounds like the lawmaker has an investment in a new reality tv show.

I think sometimes I don't appreciate the hazards of law enforcement.

Try sneaking up on someone with a bright light shining from your hand. This asshat must have been paid off by a handgun minicam company. Dumbest idea ever.
