LT, you've gone over and above your obligations. Put it down before it hurts you or monster. :huggy:

Liberty, I had a similar situation when I moved here 14 years ago. My x got a Chesapeake Bay Retreiver for my children. When I moved to Calvert with the my children, my x didn't want the dog anymore, so he asked me to take him. Bailey, was beautiful and sweet, but one day a man came to survey some trees for lumber. Bailey was outside, and made a beeline for the guy and bit him in the knee. We were lucky he didn't sue our butts off! My x had failed to tell me that Bailey was already on probabtion in Mont. Cty. for knipping/biting at an off duty LEO that was jogging in a park. Thanks alot, idiot x husband. The next day, after the man was bitten in the knee, we took Bailey to the shelter. One of the hardest things I have ever had to do, but it was the right thing to do. My husband wouldn't take Bailey back, and I knew what his fate would be because he was labeled as a biter. I feel for you and my heart breaks for you with the decision you might have to make. Just thought sharing my story would help you; it sometimes helps to know others have been in your shoes. :huggy:

Edit: I have thought about your situation more. Wouldn't your x consider taking the dog if he knows you have been injured, and also could accidentally hurt yours/his child, because of his energy? My x has a stone cold heart because he is an alien robot not from planet Earth. I suppose you have already talked with him, and it really isn't any of my business. Your situation is just on my mind.

I agree with most of the people above. Take it to the ex and drop it off. He needs to man up and take care of the dog he brought into the deal.

I, for one, think it is really really really nice of her to try to find the dog a good home rather than just take it to the shelter.

I think so, too, but if no one steps up to take the dog....

The problem is that the dog has behavior issues. Very few people are going to want to take that on, especially in a pit, and that limits her options.

How does that work with local rescues? The Frederick Humane Society will not harbor a known biter or behavior problem because they can't adopt them out. They put those dogs down. What do our shelters do? Do they refuse them or do they take them?

I'm a firm believer that there are so many well-adjusted and loveable dogs that can't find homes that there are times when the humane thing to do is to put down the ones that aren't.

:yeahthat:

Let us not forget, this dog has already injured her and it's aggreessive toward other animals. She has a TODDLER in the house. :jameo: I for one can't stand by and watch the train wreck.

LT, reality check here. Ask yourself who is more important, you and your child or this dog? If the answer is the dog, can you live with the conequences if you don't find a home for it NOW? It's a matter of time. This dog is a bomb about to explode. You've already been injured just by trying to walk the dog. What happens when you try to correct the dog one more time and it snaps???

Don't take it to the shelter, don't give it to your ex, do the humane thing and put this dog down before someone gets seriously hurt/killed. It's a pitbull, it's very possible that is what CAN happen, it's not a 4 pound yorkie ankle biter.

My curiosity is if we Humans have bred these and other animals with these traits but know that when dealing with Pits, Chows, and a few other breeds you are essentially dealing with a loose cannon. Why do we still pursue these animals? Or why not breed out these aggressive traits?

I know that this sounds bad but, if LT said a Retriever I know that I would probably be a sucker and fall for another fur ball. However it is a Pit, I will never trust the breed due to the "backyard breeders" Pits are handsome animals but they are not for everyone just like many other poorly matched owners and breeds.

I will ask people that I know if they can take him LT, but you might have to take Vrai's advice and move on with taking care of your baby and yourself. It is a tough decision to make but you should be applauded for what you have tried to do up until this point in time
