So, while on the subject, with the router, my house will have wifi. What about if my son wants to use it outside our house, like at Grandma's house. Will she also need a router or what about on vacation/on the road? Would he be able to pick up a signal in a car?

You'll have to get him an air card of some sort. Or...just take him places where there is free wifi. McD's has it now.

Don't spend the money on an aircard. If he's going to grandmas or on vacation, just make sure he's loaded up with books and games before he goes. You don't have to always be connected to the wi-fi network to use the device. You can play many games "offline" once they are downloaded, and books can be read without being connected once they've been downloaded.

Also, like Socki said, when you are traveling many places have free wi-fi available, from hotels to businesses to get new downloads or play games online or surf the net.

Yes. The only probably I've run into is "submitting scores" on games online. Not an issue. I have a tablet, have many of the Amazon apps on it and keep it offline almost all the time.

Got my other son a Kindle recently and they are telling me that they both can't use the Wifi at the same time. Is that right? Is there something I can do / something I need to buy so that both can use the wifi at the same time? Needless to say, this has been causing fights as to whose turn it is to use the wifi and how long they are allowed to use it. TIA.

I tested it myself. It works. Just slow to load and my boys have no patience. Now that they know it will work, they know they may have to wait for some things to load.

you could visit 'speed test' on a laptop / desktop - test, then visit the same site on the Kindle - test agaisnt the same 'server' compare the results

I posted the question on Amazon and the concensus is that it's probably the bandwidth.

Absolutely. DSL is one of the slowest networks available, from .5 to 3 Mb/s. If the kids are comparing it to their friends with cable or FIOS service, it will seems like a snail.

I have DSL, and I just deal with it because I'm the only one in the house and it's cheap. As soon as you start putting multiple people on it and attempting to do more than check email or surf, it's going to bog and become useless.
