need new tires for puddle jumper

I pretty much need new tires for most of my vehicles, but the priority is the puddle jumper. 185-70-14 is the current size, but if I wanted a slightly wider tire, what size would I look for?

Also, I need to get some good gripping tires for braking since I seem to end up behind idiots who don't notice the traffic ahead of them is braking until the last minute, and me being in the puddle jumper, I can't see around them. Given the choice, I'd much rather drive the SUV (and it needs new tires too), but it uses more gas in 10 days than I have in my MONTHLY gas budget.

Any suggestions for a specific tire to look for? I am hoping to pay a maximum of $320 for 4 tires, installation, spin balancing etc. I'm pretty sure the Michelin's are out of reach financially, so what else is decent?

I was hoping to get a specific tire brand/style (or whatever the sub-name is called) recommendation that I can find locally. I like what I have read about the Michelin Defender, but they tend to run about $120 per tire.

Ok I sent him a PM and a txt. If I don't offer Roy Rogers, he may not reply LOL.

Anyone interested in adopting a really cute petite Jack Russell Terrier named Lacey? She only weighs 11 lbs, and she's cute as can be. Loves people with a passion, gets along with other dogs, cats, etc. Lacey and a male Pit Mix named Clinton became homeless when her prior owner became homeless.

Clinton is being fostered separately from Lacey, so them being apart doesn't seem to be an issue with either of them. Lacey really misses having human companionship. A person who is home a lot would be ideal for Lacey but she does fine when left alone also as she does NOT have separation anxiety, and never tears up anything either.

What is the puddle jumper, by year, Gurps is on the right track with the proper upsizing technique, but he offered up 16s, not 15s. What you are looking to do is go with a wider tread but a shorter sidewall number to keep the overall tire height inline with what you had. My car, I went from a 245/45 to a 275/40.

Quick and simple guide to what these mean.

First number (195, 245, 185, what have you) Indicates tread width in mm.

185mm = about 7.3 inches wide, 195mm = 7.6, now a 1/3rd increase in width doesnt sound like much, but remember, this is area, not just width. So that extra .3 inches gets you almost 3 whole extra square inches of contact patch per tire, or 12 square inches between your four tires. Thats a significant amount of extra rubber meeting the road.

Second number (40, 55, 75, what have you) indicates the height in the sidewall as a percentage of the first number. So, made up numbers to ease of understanding, a 200/50 tire would have a sidewall height of 100mm. A 200/75 would have a sidewall 150mm tall.

Last number (15, 14, or even 20) is simply the daimter of the wheel you are putting the tire on.

There are other limitations, depending on how wide your wheels are, but since you are not looking to get crazy with width, that shouldn't enter into it.

can't believe I didn't notice I spelled puddle as pubble in the subject LOL

so I can look for 195 70 14 ? or will the 70 also change due to the change from 185 to 195?

70 is the 'height' of the sidewall depending on the tire, you might find a

195 that fits a 14 inch rim in 65 / 70 / 75

@glhs - I was merely stating my Saturn tire size [IIRC is started as a 165]

Gurps, thought so, but when dealing with folks like Arkie who are not car people, better to be sure :)

Arkie, what you have now is a 185-70-14, which comes out to a five inch tall sidewall.

a 195-70 comes out to about 5.3 inches, not really huge. And some of this id driven by how modern your car is, some modern ones with stability systems and suchcars freak out a bit over oversize tires. One reason I asked what sort of car it was.

A 195-65, on the other hand, comes out to 4.99 inches, a much better match. Now, a shorter sidewall brings two other things to the table. One is a slightly rougher ride, but the other is better cornering. Both factors not a really huge in these sizes, though. I would go for the 195-65 if you can find tires you want in that size.

I see these on TR, not a bad price, I've ran a few sets of Kuhmos on my Neon back in the day and they were very good.

but that size seems limiting, if we step up to 195/70s, you get more options. I'm discounting any Chinese brands, but keeping Korean brnads, I have done a couple of different Korean brands and been satisfied with them.

another option

Now, those prices dont include shipping, nor of course mounting and balancing. You might take these sizes brands to a few tire shops and ask them for quotes. Not sure whats local to you. And when they say that this sint the stock size, explain that you understand that, and you will be fine. Some places might refuse to upsize the tires.

Ah, now we can get serious :) Up til now, I was riffing on what the possibilities were, but very loosely. There's about a billion bytes of data out there on what tires fit the stock wheels on an Accord. 5 billion teenagers have spent a silly amount of man years doing trial and error :) You just gotta sort the data, I'll have more later.....

for a Civic LX that's 10 years old now with about 140k miles

Hmmm, so I pull up a 2004 Civic LX coupe and see this

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Selec...del=Civic+LX+Coupe&autoYear=2004&autoModClar=

Says stock size is

195/60-15

In that size, the Hankook and the Kuhmos are good bets, I just finished up a set of theHankooks brand on the Charger, and while not as good performance wise as the 200 apeice tires I had been running, still delivered %80 of the performance for %60 of the price.

Most likely not, given Honda's penchant for small changes over time. I'll check when i get home.

So far I think Michelin Defender is my best choice. Best price Sears can give me is $93 a tire plus installation fees and road hazard was $497. That is almost $200 over my price range. But I don't want to buy cheap tires with a 40k mile warranty either. I think there is A $70 rebate on a set of 4 Michelin tires, which brings it closer to my price range of $320.

You can go on the tires plus site and put in your vehicle make and model and they will show you options. And Rebates.
