For starters-why not a ferry to carry folks and their cars? Like it use to be. (or, remember the scene from War of the Worlds)
I don't know of that many folks who would want to drive to a shuttle area, get on a boat, get shuttled to point B then at the end of the day get shuttled back to the boat and so on and so on....

We have two active ferries here in the Salisbury area. You drive on, cross the river and drive off (free of charge!)

I wouldn't pay to cross in a ferry across the bay from Annapolis to Kent Island (unless the bridge was closed down) I would pay a lot of money to get closer to my destination (Southern Maryland) from Crisfield. Crisfield is maybe 45 minutes from OC. That would cut the Bay Bridge traffic, and somebody could make some money.

Anybody been on the Cape May Lewes Ferry?

:howdy: I thought it was nice and totally loved seeing the Victorian homes and bird sanctuaries over in Cape May.

Beautiful place, but that darn ferry ride took forever (could be because I couldn't smoke)

Yes. So it would be feasible if they could do the same thing to the Eastern Shore. Get all the Southern Maryland people and even some Western Shore people over there to cross the bay on a big ferry instead of the bridge.

They would lose a lot of revenue for the bridge. Someone else would be making the money and they don't want that to happen.

Was there a sign up somewhere saying that?

If I remember correctly, my husband and I did smoke outside on the deck. I remember it being freezing and my hot chocolate being hot (flaming hot). This was about 10 years ago. I think we need to go over and visit again sometime.

Cove Point straight across to the Easter Shore (Meekins Neck area) is between 4 and 5 miles. A ferry like the Lewes ferry would take about 25 minutes.

80 minutes to go 17 miles, but the drive takes four or five hours.

That just makes too much sense, doesn't it?

Yeah. That would make OC about 70 miles from Meekins Neck area. So Cove Point to OC would be 2 hours or less.

68,500 cars a day on average.. and they think 200 a day taking a ferry would make a difference.. how moronic..

I would think to have any noticeable impact it would have to reduce the amount of cars by at least 25%.. and then it would be back to the 68,000 a day in less then a decade.. So you need ferries in place to take 15,000 - 20,000 cars a day..

I would think they'd be better served to make the ferry service more in Southern MD.. I'm not going to take a ferry across in a place where there is a bridge that can get me across in a 10th (or better) of the time.
When I read the Post article that said 200 cars, I wondered if they lost some zeroes before it got to the printer.

On a summer weekend? You would be lucky to make it to Worcester County From Calvert within 5 hours.

I've never left Calvert later than 8 AM on a Saturday and have never taken longer (except for accident detours) than 3 hrs. 20 min. to Coastal Highway. Never, ever would I even think of coming back on a Sunday evening.
