New mma/ boxing gyms

I don't personally have them as it's my son that trains with them. But I do know he has several guys training in there right now for some big fight coming up. Everyone I know that trains with them has nothing but good things to say. It's worth at least going to check it out. He may even give you a trial to see if you like it or not. This BBA is VERY different then the others in California and Leonardtown. Plus his MMA program is not affiliated with his tae kwon do classes. He does MMA separately in the back of his TKD studio.

Sounds legit. Royal MMA was kind of the same way. The TKD class was the typical McDojo/black belt in 3 years/ pay for your belt type stuff but the MMA class was very serious.

Can you ask your son if they do pure BJJ classes? I don't really have a desire to do MMA, I have enough martial arts related injuries.

Any updates to new classes in the area?

Has anyone tried SMMAA in Bryans Road? It's a little too far from me unfortunately. :frown:

I have not tried it, but I know that it's a great place. A few of my friends from work go there and they rave about it. I've been there a few times for Boy's taekwondo tournaments and it's a pretty nice facility. :yay:

I've been thinking about giving them a try, but I'd really like a gym with more than just boxing. Have you gone there before? I need to work on my muay thai.

I have not. I watched a boxing card they promoted a few months ago. I know you’re looking for a gym or class, and I've gone through the same thing on and off, well forever. I can’t speak highly enough of the Bas Rutten Muay Thai workout system. A heavy bag, and an mp3 player is all you need and I've never had a better stand up workout, ever. Plus it's always open, with no commute, fees or BS. It's one of the best investments I ever made.

I just called Legends to inquire about their training/classes. A membership is $50 per month, and single sessions are $10 for 1/2 hour one-on-one instruction. Hours are 5-9 during the week. Saturdays are reserved for pros and special instruction.

I'm going to check them out either this week or next week.

I forgot to mention this yesterday but the Black Belt Academy in the Wildewood Shopping center offers Kick Boxing classes.

Action Taekwondo and Fitness Center in Laurel Glen (by Kmart) offers Cardio Kick Boxing at a much lower price. I've been considering starting the program. Then again, I've been saying that I was going to start Taekwondo for almost a year.

Where is the closest place to do pure BJJ?

There is only one place to do BJJ in Southern Maryland. That is at CalvertMMA in Sunderland. They are a Relson Gracie school that is owned by a 3 stripe Relson Gracie Brown Belt, Jim Thirft, and 2 classes a week are taught by a 3 stripe Relson Gracie Black Belt, Toney Waldecker.
Calvert MMA Academy | Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Southern Maryland BJJ
Classes are from 7 to 10 Monday through Thursday nights and from 10 to 2:30 on Saturday.
In addition to BJJ they also have Muay Thai taght by Carlos Lopez.

Southern Maryland Jiu Jitsu does NOT teach BJJ, they teach Japanese Jujitsu.
