New Prius Expected to Get 94mpg says US News

What about when you account for the batteries or the cost of the solar cells and the batteries or windmills?

Just wondering how practical it really is.
I wouldn't want a "plug in" unless it was cheap to get it out of the plug. The Toyota system should be the way to go. In most cases, you go down as many hills as you go up and everytime you let off the accelerator, you're charging the batteries. I'm guessing that the new Prius big mpg figures are because of a new type of battery....maybe?

THAT is an electric car I'd jump on. :yay: :yay:
From the article:
Rather than design a new battery from scratch, they made the roadster's energy-storage system a multitude of rechargeable laptop computer battery cells — 6,831 per car — arranged in a half-ton block that's catacombed with cooling channels. Each cell is a little bigger than a AA battery, virtually identical to the few lithium-ion cells that power the IBM ThinkPad on which this story was written
.
Maybe the high mpg Prius has something like this.
Slick car even for $94k.

It must run on smug.

:lmao: That was the first thing I thought of....

I had looked into, and still have the plans, for building an all-electric vehicle. I was going to convert a Mazda B2200 pickup. It would have done 90mph, 4 hour recharge and about 150 miles between charges. Perfect for the local around town stuff here. Ah, but then life throws you a curve....

And whats happens when those batteries fail to recharge or hold a charge. Whats the cost in replacing them???

From Toyota's website:
Hybrid-Related Component Coverage Hybrid-related components for hybrid vehicles are covered for 8 years/100,000 miles. The HV battery may have longer coverage under emissions warranty. Refer to applicable Owner's Warranty Information booklet for details.
.
That's a better warranty than most conventional drivetrains and as it says the HV battery may be covered even longer. They are expected to last from 150k to 200k miles. I would be expecting to replace the transmission and possibly the engine of a conventional vehicle so the advantage goes to the Hybrid. Except for work trucks, I only keep a car for 5-6 years anyway.

More so... there had better be very good diagnostics on board to be able to pin-point the failed cell. Can you imagine doing a hunt-and-peck for one bad cell in almost 7000 ??

Actually the posting the guy listed the bad power cell in the pack .... but the reluctant dealer was suggesting replacing the entire pack

Vehicle Description

This auction is for a 2001 Toyota Prius.(non smoker owned) I have decided to sell my Prius AS IS ,after being informed that Toyota said it needs a new hybrid battery. Here's the story, My check engine light and the triangle light came on in my Prius. I plugged in my OBDII and it gave me code P3006, which refers to the Hybrid battery. The car still runs but the check engine light is on and the cruise won't work when that light is on,I think that the cruise is affected by the P3006 code because I reset the code and the the cruise worked until the next time the light came on. I noticed another symptom that I think is also effected by the P3006 code ,twice when going about 55 mile an hour the car seemed to go into neutral,so I pulled over and restarted engine and then it drove fine again. It appears the the Hybrid battery does more than I thought and controls more than just economy assistance. My report from Toyota said that they ran test that indicated that battery pack 18 is faulty.(I Think there are 20 some battery packs) They explained that the pack was putting off a voltage amount that was too much different from the rest of the packs and cause the P3006 code. I asked them if they opened the battery case and check the pack out for maybe corrosion, they said no they did not get into things like that. So their estimate was 3618.00 for new hybrid battery. I looked into replacing the pack but was really afraid to even get near the hybrid battery(lot of voltage). There are use batteries out there but getting someone who know what to do is a problem for me and my Toyota dealer sounds very much like that was not something they wanted to install and frankly I don't think I would want them to either. I have a reserve on this auction and if I don't get the reserve I will probably have to replace the battery and keep the car,if the reserve is not and if someone out there who knows what they are doing knows how this can be fixed at a more reasonable price please let me know, thanks. I am not aware of any other major problems with this car. It has a few rock ding that are very small and a small dent or scrap under passenger door that is not very visible. I have taken several picture to try to show any imperfections. About 6 months ago a deer landed on my hood, the hood was replaced(I left the emblem off but I have it if you want it) and the passenger side headlight,I decided to repaint the rest of the car the same color at that time so that every part of the car would definitely match and also to touch up some minor scratches,(not to mention that I planned on keeping the car.) The passenger side headlight is not perfectly aimed because the deer bent the bar that was holding the light a little, this hasn't bothered me and nobody has flashed the high beams at me on the road. I have taken a picture of the bar and am going to try to take picture of aim on garage door to show how far off it is. The car has a after market remote start that doesn't have much range and I had Toyota install a cruise control on it,the rest is all factory installed as far as I know. I think I am the second owner of this car.
