GET OUT!!! Really? Where did you hear this?

I know of someone who works for the town of LaPlata and these plans were in the making last year. Ill have to ask if he has heard anything more about it. They were going to extend the store toward the north where that wooded area is.

Last we heard about this was there was a stupid health code in Charles County that disallowed fresh food to be housed and sold with stuff sold in a store like a WalMart (something like this); that is why they are not in Charles County.

I heard a WaWa is going up there on your corner by Oliver Shop. :killingme:killingme:killingme:killingme

:lmao: I am sure Mr. Vest would have a say with something like that!

Unless it was on the corner of Oaks/Olivers Shop, and they sold cheap diesel then I would be for it. You know, only if it was convenient for ME.

That would be nice to clean up that area, wipe out the Farmers Market and put something more appealing to the eye.
From what I know of the relationship between Burroughs and Jarboe, each would fight any plans the other had for their properties there, money be damned.

Have you seen the plans for Hughesville Station and the Bargain Barns? Not sure who owns those 4 stores but doesn't seem very bright to build without having someone interested in moving in first. New empty store fronts/strip malls sitting all over Charles County, not just Hughesville. Also, the rent they are/were asking is totally unrealistic.

Yes I have, think it took that guy about 18 months to plan out that project and get the blessing of the Hughesville people.
The Bargain Barn plan would be really nice if they could some way make the buildings a little more attractive. The owner of Harley Davidson owns a couple of the barn buildings and several of the buildings in town (the old bank building is one of them) and with his money backing any projects planned, it could be a asset for Hughesville.

I see a lot of trucks parked along the Barns in the evenings. Any idea what is going on in there? Heard they were working on fixing up the insides but I've also seen families with kids in what looks like sporting attire going in.

The guy that planned the Hughesville Station project was considerate and took the time to work with the people. Hope it turns out to be a great success for him.

YEAH, what's going on there at those barns, they have a website, I checked it out and decided to try and go there sunday, as it says they are open Sundays and after walking up and down the road looking for a darn entrance, I was told it was closed??

Good grief. There's 1 Walmart in the counties that surround us...Kent, Queen Anne's, Talbot, and Caroline County. So. MD is crawling with them.

:yeahthat:

I went to college in Chestertown - I remember Wal-Mart trying so hard to go there and they got shot down, to the point that they just gave up

It isn't always up to Wal-Mart. Sure, they want to go there - but I *think* that Wal-Mart has a policy (or they used to) that they had to own the land that they built on... they wouldn't rent. That held them back from a lot because people on the eastern shore wouldn't sell the land.

Those Kent Island/QA people know how to fight a Wal-Mart :duel:

The land that the farmers market is on will never be sold.Ben Borough's owns all of the land in that area, up to Freds Liquors. He won't sell any of it. Thats why the 7-Eleven closed down, he only does ten year leases and they didn't want another ten year lease, and he wouldn't sell. And I don't think Larry Jarboe would either, I think that sawmill has been in his family for quite a while.

The problem with Hughesville is the bypass is too effective. Kind of like what the Interstate Highway did to Rt. 66. Whatever goes into Hughesville has to be something that will draw people in on it's own and have broad appeal.

Antique stores are impulse stops. Harley is not an impulse stop. Gas station won't survive if it's off the highway. McDonald's won't make it either. A fine dining location would make it (maybe) if the food and service was good enough for mAlice to like it. Used car lot won't make it without the highway visability.

It pains me to admit that I can talk the talk, but not walk the walk.

It pains me even more to say that I sold the family farm.:buddies:

That would be awesome! My mom goes to the Super Walmart in Culpeper and it is HUGE. I buy all of our household goods (detergent, TP, etc.) at Walmart because it's cheap. It will be nice to be able to one-stop shop!

That must be why they annexed that land at 301/Rosewick or were going to, so the town of La Plata will get the tax revenue.

Please let us know if you hear anything else. They're always so secretive.
