North Sandgates Road

Another fatal accident at North Sandgates Road yesterday. I've lived in Sandgates for 25 years and I can't even count how many accidents there have been at that intersection or at the south end. Dosen't somebody think there should be something done like a light or something?

56 year old woman pulled out in traffic attempting to cross the northbound lane to the median. She was pronounced dead on the scene. The dead woman failed to yield right of way and no charges are being brought against the car that hit her.

People could start by slowing down and maybe try looking both ways before pulling out. Everyones in such a hurry these days.

:yeahthat: 235 has become a raceway and many don't adequately look and determine the speed of the approaching vehicle to know whether or not it is safe to make the move across the road. Closer rate at 55 MPH as around 80 feet per second while at 80 it's almost 120 feet per second.

And as far as adding traffic lights I think you could put one at every road that has a crossover and the accidents would still happen as too many don't pay anywhere near enough attention to what they are doing while operating a 2,000+ pound vehicle.

What, if any, role did the sun shinning in the victims eyes play in this fatal accident?

If the sun is obscuring your vision
or if you are not quite sure for any other reason,
do not pull out - just wait until you are sure.

The person she pulled out in front of was coming from the SE. At that time of day, the sun was out of the WSW, well above the horizon. It was a clear day, so the sun would have helped visibility in that direction, not hurt it.

none in this case, the lady that pulled out was hit by a car from the east, sun was in the west.

 Wouldn't a car coming from the east be heading west, which is right into the sun?

Unless of course you are from Voltar, the 3rd planet in the Nimby system.

The at fault car was facing southwest. Traffic in the lane she tried to cross was coming from the southeast. She pulled out in front of a car travelling northwest. There may have been some glare for the driver travelling northwest, but the driver who caused the accident could not have had a problem with glare.

:yeahthat: she might have had a problem if she's made it to the medium, but she didn't get that far.

I'll check Google Maps for coordinates. Rt. 235 runs north and south, with the Patuxent River being to the east, and the sun setting in the west was the driver of the PT Cruiser facing the glare of the setting sun at 4 P.M.?
