Now here is a perspective on buying everything as cheap as you can.

Got this in an email.
Ya Know............its about time we draw the line on some of these manufacturers! It's getting to the point where about the only thing one can buy that is made in this country anymore are a few of the cars that are available! Large aircraft are still made in this country, but you nor I have anything to do with buying them.

A "service only" economy CANNOT survive! There are only a few of the larger John Deere tractors made in this country, and all others are imported. MOST farm equipment in made overseas, except for a few companys like Gail, Heston, etc. 90 to 95% of new small appliances are made in China, or some other country.

It is very difficult to find US made shoes anymore, except for a very few, of some of the higher price shoes. Red Wing, Chippawa, even Danner are "outsourcing" many of their boots, and many Rockys, etc are actually imports.

I sold a piece of Gravely Garden equipment on E-Bay, and got to talking with the guy who bought it when he came to pick it up, and turns out he is a "Top Secret" Pentegon employee who works on future military weapons developement. We got to talking about this..........How President Bush's new helicoptors are French Helicoptors, Locally here in South Central PA the United Defense Corp (That makes the Bradley Fighting Machine, and tanks) was sold to the French about 2 years ago...........he told me that it is a whole lot worse than even what I was saying. He said that we cannot even build a Patriot Missle, or the military's "smart bombs", without CHINEESE computer controlled parts! Where does that leave us if the Chineese ever "Get Frisky"?

Sure, I want to buy things as cheep as I can too, BUT, far to often the thing with the "cheepest" price tag actually costs 2 to 4 times what the price tag is, because they only last a few months or a few years..............case in point. When we got married 39 years ago, we were given a GE bread toaster as a wedding gift. That same toaster works as good today as it did the day we first pluged it in..............3 children and many international exchange students later...........the only thing I did was change the cord one time, and clean it frequently!...................My daughters are buying toasters every few years, because they burn out!

I have ONE Glock handgun, and one Itialian Colt walker copy, and one Taurus, but more than a dozen American ones...............The Glock I got "by default" My one daughter was dating a guy who took her credit card one day, and bought the Glock, than "dumped her" (finally) a week or two later. I tracked him down at work one day, gave him 3 days to take it to the dealer sign off on it or I would have him arrested for thieft by decption. The Itialian "Colt Walker" was given me as a gift, and the Taurus I got such a deal on that I could not turn it down. I "needed" a 4" 38 special anyways!

With the exception of 2 Russian SKS's all my rifles are made in the USA!! Yes, even my Winchesters are of US Vintage.

But I WILL NOT carry my guns in imported "Leather", or "Cordura" holsters or cases!

Optics............? Unfornutely one can hardly find a quality optic made in this country. I believe that even Swift is not imported.

I think, at the rate we are going, within 15 to 25 years the USA will be a colony of China.

We have "Given" the Panama Canal to the Chinesse, Clinton gave the Huge California Navel base to them for an import facility, and that Pentegon employee told me that there are only 3 American Customs Agents in that entire facility that brings thousands of containers a week into the USA, virtually 95% on them are NEVER checked!.................but that was Ok, Hillary forgot about what her hubby did there, with this ruckus of United Arab Emmerts running East Coast facilities.

Nope, I do not see how this country can survive much longer...........especially if we want to act as International Police Force, at our own expense, blow other countries to bits, and than turn around and rebuild them...............all with our money??????????????

Now they say that the Chineese are talking about converting some of their cash reserves into Gold...............that if they only convert 3% of their cash reserves into Gold, it will take an entire years worldwide gold production to do it....................Evidently their Cash Reserves are equal to or grater than our National Debt!!! Don't look very good ... does it?

And all of the above is not even mentioning the fact that "formerly cheap" Chinesse steel has shut down our steel producing capability in this country, and now the Chinesse are buying up all our scrap iron too! What is going on in this country? When is America going to wake up? After the Chinos start to atack, and our tactal weapons do not work because the Chineese programed them NOT to work, it will be too late.

The Asians are not DUMB. Look at Japan! They actually WON WWII! Sure we whooped them in a few years, but we distroyed all their old outdated factories and cities, than we went in and rebuilt everything for them with all new modern (in those years) factories and cities, and ON TOP OF THAT WE GAVE THEM THE ASIAN TRADE!!!

The only reason Japan entered WWII Was to get the Asian trade! And we gave them all new facilities to produce their products to trade with!

Uh, that is wrong in the first few sentences. We are the biggest maker and exporter of agricultural equipment. Yes, we produce a bunch of the equipment in foreign countries. That equipment isn't for domestic sale, though. It is for sale in those countries. We are the agricultural superpower by far, in fact. Caterpillar is a worldwide behemoth. The most modern equipment is utilized here and most of the rest of the world (especially the region formerly known a Prince... err... the Soviet Union) buys up the older equipment new and used. It keeps the companies healthy on lines that normally wouldn't profit them anymore. I don't think people realize what a big part of America industry this group is.

The Chinese component parts is misleading. also. Sure, we use lots of Chinese computer components. It is far cheaper. However, those components are readily available many other places.

Now, I get the guys point. But those countries that are "cheap" are slowly not being the cheapest anyore. Standard of living goes up and it goes to other places. This is a good thing. Booming economies mean more consumers for us. Despite what everyone believes, we still own far more of the world than anyone else. Our foreign ownership is not counted in the trade deficits which is completely misleading. We don't necessarily export more, but we build a lot of it there and sell it there.

Am I the only person in the world that doesn't buy whatever's cheapest and doesn't shop at the place with the lowest prices?

As far as buying foreign-made goods - those people have to eat, too. We do business with them, they do business with us. We buy their shoes, they buy our fast-food cheeseburgers. I have no problem with this, even though I tend to be a bit of an isolationist.

:howdy: Quality, not quantity. You get what you pay for. All that good stuff. I shop at the "upscale" grocery store in town, because the others are filthy, and have a horrible selection.

Not even when you have a Buy One Get One Free coupon?

Why would I want one free? When I am done its time to kick them out of the car going 60 down the interstate. If you time it right, its like skipping stones. I have a 7 skip record. Anyone beat that?

I think whoever drafted this email is making things up. :jameo:

A team led by Lockheed Martin Systems Integration, Owego, N.Y., will build the new presidential helicopter

Actually, the original airframe is foreign. But its built on a British-Italian airframe, not a French. However, the new version will be an Americanized airframe.

It's all a mix and hodge podge. We've taken a ton of foreign developed military equipment and modified and improved upon it. Don't we use a ton of Rolls Royce engines in our military aircraft?

Yes, and we sell many more GE engines overseas than we buy foreign engines. :yay:

:yay: United Defense was not sold to the French. There are so many problems with this that I can't take it seriously, even if the philosophy is sound. It's like the mistaken "facts" that JPC quotes. Too many errors.

You guys make me wish I hadn't posted it. I looked upon it as the concept rather than the gospel. I only believe in four gospels.

I was looking at:

All service not a good thing.
All eggs in one basket not a good thing.
Giving away the farm not a good thing.
Depending on overseas suppliers of defense products not a good thing

But sorry vrai, going premo to delete this thread is not worth it. Not enough going on in the private forum with all the private forums competing.

It never ceases to amaze me how some people continually get duped by this "service economy" crap. Service jobs are labor intensive and have low profit margins, which mean you don't bring on more people just to impress. You can only bring on more people if the demand is there, so if there are all these service sector jobs opening up by the thousands there must be plenty of higher-paying jobs also opening up to drive the service demand, yet these folks can't or won't see that fact. If higher-paying jobs were going down, service-sector jobs would be falling also.

As for price and quality, this guys fails to take into account point of purchase. The next time you're in Sears looking at a $59 B&D drill, write down the model number. Then go to WalMart and find a drill that looks identical but only costs $19.98. Then check the model number... they won't be the same. The Sears drill will last for decades, and the WalMart drill will quit after a year or two, but that's what they're designed to do. Manufacturers have been making externally identical, but internally different, models of toasters, microwaves, Belgian waffle makers, and tools for decades... one gets sold at a high-end retailer for more money, and the other gets sold at a discount dealer. Bottom line is you get what you pay for.

As for foreign manufacturers, they wouldn't be in business if Americans weren't buying. S&W pretty much doomed themselves when they signed on with the gun control crowd; Colt shot themselves in the foot when they dragged their feet for twenty years on competing with low-cost SAA revolvers from Italy; and Winchester was just as dumb for not being more price competitive.
