Obama wants all kids to speak Spanish!?

The Navajo are immigrants, too.

What they stress is not what they practice. The alcoholism rate on reservations is around 50%. There is no work because they do not create jobs for themselves (sovereign nations and all )

We took the land from them and we introduced liquor to them, they didn't know what it was before we came.

I've been over there too. The hotel staff speaks English. The deli counter person doesn't. The bellhop doesn't. The waiter barely does.

Those people don't come over here.

It's like characterizing all Chinese as industrious, hi-tech nerds and scientists - thus ignoring the more than a billion rural peasants with very little education. Why do we think that? That's who visits here.

Learn a language because you NEED to. But not because you're "embarassed" by your culture.
Need to or want to - I fully agree. And, we shouldn't be embarassed, I fully agree with that.

Every country has taken land from other countries. That's how it works.

What does introducing liquor hundreds of years ago have to do with the American Indian today? NOBODY was introduced to it before they were born. Some people learn to rely on it as a crutch, some don't.

And yet another reason to learn Spanish. McCain has a new radio ad in Spanish aimed at the people in Florida!

ALL the people in FL?

When in Rome.....

I would imagine only those that speak Spanish. Something about the Columbia trade agreement being good for the people of Florida. I'm only partly through the article - work is really getting in my way today!

don't bother talking to him about native americans. He hates em all. I don't know if autoprune has got the genocide thread yet, but some of his views on native americans are .... well, terrible would be a nice way of putting them.

I think nothing but good things about them.

I just don't think they're godlike in their infinite wisdom, nor do I think the United States' foundation was killing them off. I don't think they're a poor, misunderstood people who were just out picking wildflowers until we came over and shot them all.

I think they were a group of small, informal countries that warred with each other, and we beat them overall in wars against us. We took their lands, just like we took England's land, and Spain's land, and..... It's how it was done back then. They lost, they were treated like crap, and a few hundred years later it might be time to start getting over what our great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandparents did to theirs.

If you're going to put words in my mouth, use mine, not yours. Genocide - no. Horrifically terrible treatment, unfair, unjust, not right - yes. Over and done with too long ago to care about anymore - yes.

I wish I could write what Morgan was saying verbatim, I stayed up too late so I'm a little too spent to debate (excuses). Or I wish you could have seen that episode. I got all misty eyed. I know my father's side of the family wasn't here until the early 1900's and my mom's well they were Pilgrims, Native American and Pennsylvania Dutch....

I'll bet it was a good one, they usually are.

I'm sure there are a lot of them who still feel ambushed empathetically for their forefathers. My advice to them would be to get on with their lives, build a great society within their protected reservations, and have that best revenge: a good life.

jerk :sarcasm:

Its sad that you have these views that they were such an insignificant people, they are much more than that, they have culture, tradition love and respect for each other. While they are holding on to life we are drenching our with things like cars (yes even the one in my avatar) video games, drugs, big houses, big jewels, big boobs, we're all caught up in a soulless pop culture were everything is disposable.

To each his own.

How did you get that I find them an insignificant people?

I'm sure they have a rich culture, traditions, love and respect for each other. I'm sure there are great American Indians, just like there are great Americans. I'm sure there are some pompous, shallow azzes, like the Americans you describe above.

I just don't think they're MORE significant than any other Americans.

I read :

Without the "I Don't Think" in front of it.

See, its time for me to log out.... looking at the screen too long coupled with 2.5 hours of sleep = foot in mouth......

:stupid: I'm sorry :flowers:

Good night.

I didn't watch the video because I'm lazy and hate sitting through them.

Did Obama specifically say "Spanish" or just any language will do? Because most of the world speaks English, and that is the language of world business. Spanish isn't a beneficial language for either traveling abroad or trying to conduct business on a higher level. American children would be better served learning Chinese or Arabic. But most of those folks speak English as well as their native.

My next language will be ASL, so I can say more than "I love you" and "Mmmmm, bacon..." to deaf people. :jet:
He said Spanish, but then elaborated, explaining that visitors to the US usually speak English in addition to French or German or are otherwise bilingual.

Actually my boss does and if he ever gets off the phone I'll ask him to pronounce it. She was a saint?
The spelling is Anglefied, (or maybe Greek, since there is a "ph" and not an "f") so you pronounce it like it's spelled. She's one of those saints that has been taken off the official list of saints because she's considered a myth or a legend. The local Catholic gift shop has St. Dymphna medals though...I had to buy one, I couldn't resist.

Patron saint of the mentally ill...seemed appropriate for the forums.
