Obamanation is only covering up for the fact he is not planning on sending the wetbacks home where they belong, and the wetbacks are not going to integrate themselves in our society, so we have to be the ones to give in, and learn Spanglish ....

that's actually not what was said in that video at all.

It was another snide, elitist crack about how Americans should be more like Europeans. He should run for President of France.

Have you checked out recently how our dollar is doing against the Euro?

As of today our dollar is worth 63.59% of 1 Euro.

Perhaps we could take a few lessons from those dirty Europeans.

I think he was talking down to black people, and white people, and red people, and yellow people, and brown (naw, probably not brown) people.

Yeah, I sure want France's unemployment rate of nearly 8%, 15% of the workforce working for minimum wage and have France bail us out of every war we lost.

Besides that, I'm sure they wear purfume to disguise their lack of hygiene.

I would like to be able to up to a country for policy guidance, not down.

Wait until you see the video.# It had nothing whatsoever to do with immigration, legal or illegal.
Well, other than the three or four times he mentioned immigrants specifically, and stated emphatically that we need not worry whether they'll learn English - 'THEY WILL learn English'
It wasn't even about speaking Spanish specifically
Except the part where he specifically told me I should be making sure my kids learn Spanish, uh, become bilingual.
and it was definately NOT about changing street signs and phone messages to be bi-lingual.# It was about expanding the education of American children to include foreign languages in order to be better able to communicate with the rest of the world.
Right, because Americans are embarrassing us here, and overseas.

Wow, What is so wrong with a presidential candidate encouraging Americans to better themselves by learning another language? Maybe you yourself are not interested but you should be encouraging your children to do so. Although speaking another language is not at all necessary, it is indeed a quality asset for a person to posses. The Spanish language is increasing in the United States dramatically. I for one want my children to succeed in whatever they decide to do and I do not want a language barrier holding them back. Instead of constantly "Nit-Picking" on our FUTURE PRESIDENT ( for those that will acknowledge him when he BECOMES president) How about you spend your time on our world wide web and see how much of a difference it could make in your child’s future.
If he said, "Hey, it's a good idea to learn a second language, and I propose as a presidential candidate that we figure out how to encourage that in schools - because it's important for our future global marketing", I'd be all for it.

That's not what he did.

He first off dismissed the concept of a national language as unnecessary because immigrants will learn English (even though reality proves him wrong on that).# Then he tells me I'm wrong for being worried about it, and then proceeds to lecture me about what I should be teaching my kids.# He finishes up laughing (literally) at the stupidity of embarrassing Americans (his words, not mine) for not being more like the Europeans he's aware of.Delivery.# Context.# Substance.# All of these things are wrong with it.

Once again, I hear nothing wrong with what he is saying. He is simply telling us Americans to broaden our minds and put them to work. This country is a melting pot full of different religions, cultures, and languages. To encourage a person to better themselves does not seem like a terrible idea. His overall point is to “encourage”, But since he did not word it the way you would have liked to hear it that means he is making a mockery of the US ??

Increase your children’s chances of having a brighter future, The US is changing regardless if you want it to or not. Don’t hold your children back just because you want to make a point.

President Bush speaks Spanish, as well as former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.
Oh, can’t forget about Mr. Gore. The list goes on and on, just do some research as I have said before.

America has the 5th largest Spanish speaking population in the WORLD. So please get over yourselves and stop trying to turn everything into something negative. In order to communicate effectively in our countries future we should encourage Americans to learn other languages despite our arrogance.

I think that his attitude is the same as an average Joe. I think he talks as if he is talking to friends and does not put on a show for those expecting it of him. I don't think that he is acting superior to the ordinary US citizen, I think he is trying to relate with them and encouraging them to strive higher.

He's telling us that in the context of belittling the concept of a national language, tellling us that immigrants will learn English (even though that's proven untrue), and in the form and attitude of "Americans are embarrassing". If this were any Joe Shmoe, I'd argue the first point, point out the fallacy of the second point, and punch him for the third point. Is it a good idea to learn a second language? Sure, if that's what you want to do and you want to be more competetive internationally. Is a good leadership trait to belittle a national language, argue untruths as if they were fact, and insult the countrymen you want to represent? Uh, HELL no.

Encourage? Sure, not a bad idea at all. Presume we're arrogant? Really, really, really bad idea for a presidential candidate. Especially when stating how embarrassing our implied stupidity and presumed arrogance is.

The point still isn't whether or not it's a good idea to learn a second language. That's a no-brainer for someone who chooses to compete globally. The point is still that he's arguing against a national language as unneccessary, and that he's making his point of a second language from the point of view of how embarrassed he is of Americans. Change the argument to whether a second language is worthwhile all you want, but that's not what most people object to from his rant.

If you don't think his outright laughing at Americans because they can't speak as well internationally as he might like isn't acting superior to the ordinary US citizen - that it's just relating to them and encouraging them - you need to rethink either your relationships and how you relate to people, or your ability to read people.

What about kids that have speech problems? I am worried. My son has a hard enough time with english. I have said it before but i just want to make a point. The kids should not be forced to learn another language. It should not be mandatory. If if their spare time they want to learn that should be up to the parents. Not a president. I don't want to be like Europeans. If i wanted to be like them i moved to their country. I understand that the spanish language is over coming everything but yeah here's an idea. How about people who only speak spanish or another language learn english. Why not force that!
Barry starts off his tirade (video in the first post) saying that you needn't worry about establishing English as the American language - it needn't be forced because immigrants will learn English ("don't worry, they'll learn it").

It's not up to a president, nor a presidential candidate whether or not to learn a second language. Thank goodness.

no, but the president can influence congress, who can then influence the states by threatening to take away funding for things if spanish does not become a core subject in the schools...

True. And, similarly, if he already dismisses out of hand the concept of a national language, there's unlikely to be a national language.
