Oil Heat

I found a couple places to rent but they have oil heat. I don't know anything about oil heat. How the maintenance etc is. How much does it cost to heat a house? ( 1500-2000 sq ft)

Depends on if it's oil hot air or oil boiler/baseboard.

A hot air system has fewer parts and is less troublesome, but baseboard provides a nicer warmth. If the burner components are not old, a yearly maintenance by a local company (SMO, burch, etc) is all that is needed. I have a service contract which gets me a cleaning every year and 24/7 emergency service, about $160 a year.

Costs for heating the house will depend on the size of the house, insulation, your ability to keep the thermostat down a few notches, etc. You might be able to ask the Realtor for previous owner costs.

I also supplement with pellets, so my oil cost is low. I went for 3 years before I used enough oil to warrant a delivery of 140 gallons.

Oil heat is a fairly cheap way to heat.. and as far as the maintenance, that would be on your landlord to take care of.

Hopefully they have a large tank so you can buy your oil in the summer time when prices are low.. and you won't have to refill in the middle of the winter when the prices are spiking.

We had oil in my house there. Home was about 1000 sq ft and I would turn it down to 63 when I went to work and when I got home, Id kick the heat on and in a few min., whala heat. Then I would turn it back down. Very nice heat. My largest bill in winter was abot 145.00 and Id fill the tank once a year or so. This year would have cost more because of all the cold and snow.

$145 for the whole winter or just 1 month?

Oil heat is awesome but can get expensive if you're 'cold blooded'. There's just too much of a temptation to crank the thermostat up and feel that warm air flooding the house.

I keep my heat at 65 during the day. I sometimes turn it up to 68 when i first wake. At night i turn it down to 60. It stays warm upstairs and we have down comforters, so i don't see the point of having the heat running.

I have oil heat and like to keep my house toasty (70-72). I pay $59 a month on the budget plan and this includes the cost for a service plan which I think is about $170. I only pay for 10 months a year, so I gues that means oil for the year is some where around $420.00. I have a 1950 sf house. Hope this helps.

That helps a lot. That's not bad at all.

Where are some places i can get the oil from? I figure i would get some quotes. There some really nice houses and i don't want to shy away because of oil heat. Thanks for all your help. It is not as bad as i thought it would be.

We use Sothern MD Oil. They have a 10 month budget program. Ours is set at $30/mo which includes the annual maintenance/cleaning. We set our heat at 68-70 when we're up and about. It goes down to 64 when we're asleep ro at work/school.

I have oil boiler/baseboard. So the oil heats the house and the hotwater. In the winter we burn 100 gallons of oil a month. About 600 - 650 gallons of oil a year. Home heating oil prices have ranged from $2.90 - $3.32 a gallon.

This was our first winter in our house with oil heat. Our house is about 1400sqft and we've used about 320 gallons (at $2.89gal). Always fill the oil tank in the summertime, when the oil prices are lower!

NOT Politically Correct!!
Other than the oil and maybe an air filter, shouldn't the maintence be the responsibility of the homeowner?

We always have our tank topped off in May or June.

Go Local!!

I would go with Ridgell Oil. They are a local company and anytime you need to speak with the owner, he is readily available. The best part is they all speak ENGLISH!! They have budget plans as well. I just had a brand new oil fired "dual purpose water heater (a.k.a boiler) system installed last August. Not currently on a budget plan but will be next year. Great people to deal with!! :dingding:
