Paranoid mom-to-be - OB in Calvert/Annapolis?

:yahoo: Hubby and I are expecting our first baby! :yahoo:

I'm starting my 7th week of pregnancy. I currently go to Calvert OBGYN and as things stand now, I would deliver our baby at Calvert Hospital. I like my doctor there but we only moved here less than a year ago so I don't have a long standing bond with her. The hospital is only 10 minutes from our house, making it really convenient.

I recently spoke with someone who lives in Calvert but opted to go to Annapolis OBGYN (an hour away) to deliver her 4 kids instead of staying local. She was considered high risk (twins & age). She said that Calvert would have to fly the baby out if there were any complications during birth. She further stated that if the baby was ready to join us prior to week 36 that they would advise me to go somewhere else for the delivery because it would be considered high risk and again, they aren't equipped to handle the high risk cases. I will speak with my doctor about all of this at my appt next week.

I know this is a personal decision and I'm probably being paranoid. I have no reason to believe that our baby will have any issues. I just want to get some input from those of you who have had babies at Calvert or opted to go up to Annapolis. I have a few friends who's babies had major issues at birth. It kind of scares me that they may have to fly our baby out instead of taking him/her down the hall for care, if something should go wrong. TIA!

My OB was 10 minutes away but the hospital I delivered at was an hour away. It had to be that way, my son had an SVT they found it in utero :yay: So I was lucky in that retrospect.

I say if you don't feel good switch. Its your baby and your body.

Congrats! :flowers:

I didn't deliver either of my babies while living down here. When I was pregnant with the first one, we visited the hospitals locals to us to decide which hospital we liked best and then went with an OB based on that. I think you have to be comfortable with where you are delivering your baby. We ended up going with the hospital that had more privacy during labor and for after the baby was born (the other hospital still had shared rooms/dorm-style showers -- ugh!!), but that's what was important to me at the time. Of course, they were both pretty big hospitals, so NICU care wasn't a problem unless it was something really major and then I think even Annapolis would send your baby elsewhere (and you would probably want them to, as Hopkins or Children's would be a better place anyway, in most cases).

All that to say, go with whatever makes you most comfortable. And congratulations!!!:yahoo:

OB/GYNs have back-up plans should complications arise outside of their abilities so IMO you should make choices and plans for a safe, happy, healthy pregnancy and delievery and take it from there. Enjoy the next 8 months and stop stressing over things that most likely will never happen!

My last child was born at Civista, which also is not equipped to deal with any neo-natal complications and will also fly out any infants born with issues.

I discovered that one plus of this situation is that you plan to deliver there, they will do everything they can to determine in advance if there are complications so that if they DO anticipate problems, you can deliver somewhere else that is better able to deal with it.

They did more/better screening then when I had my first two kids, who were delivered at one of the top birthing facilities in the state.

Women give birth at Calvert all the time without incident. But if you'd be more comfortable in Annapolis, go for it. :yay:

St. Mary's is the same way as far as if the baby comes at 36 weeks or before. I loved my OB, then when my little girl decided to come 3 weeks early - I got someone who I had never met. Needless to say, it was still a good experience. I would say just take it 1 week at a time, you can plan everything, but when it comes down to it, nothing usually goes as planned.

Congrats on your pregnancy.

Not saying anything would go wrong but if they had to fly the baby out for any reason it would be closer to deliver at the hospital they would be flying out to.

I can understand what she is saying, I have seen too many babies fly out, as a parent you feel helpless. I was lucky the Dr. found my son's SVT early.

WDF. So worth the wait.
Gotta do what you are comfortable with.

I delivered my twins at Calvert and had a great experience. Dr. Alonzo was my OB and she is amazing.

If you decided deliver at Calvert, talk to your OB about how they handle pregnancies that turn high risk, what factors they look at in choosing to transport, etc. Your answer will probably come with how comfortable you are with their answers.

You have to do whatever makes you feel comfortable!!! The ONLY reason I delivered my daughter at Civista was because of my OB. But after reading the above comment, I am leery of delivering the twins there! On one hand, I really want my OB to deliver them - on the other, I already know of so many risks (i.e., I will not get past 37 weeks) that maybe I need to be thinking more like you are???

Thank you. I can understand the need for privacy and non-dormlike conditions.

I don't want to share a room with anyone, if it can be avoided. We plan to tour both places next week. I hear both are really nice and offer privacy. I'm gonna need some beauty sleep for all the out of town guests that are going to be stalking us shortly after the birth. :killingme

Don't say that - they usually bring FOOD! Food you'll be too tired to cook!!! And that nice meal will keep you going more than the McD's will!!
