Parents To Sue Bat Maker Over Sons Injury

If you are talking about reaction time of the pitcher to "defend" themselves or the reaction time of the batter to swing then they are comprabale. I am not arguing that, I am contending that EVERYTHING else being equal a baseball his going to have more velocity coming off the bat.

But a baseball also travels farther when it is hit. The fielders are also further out than on a smaller softball diamond. It may have move velocity coming off the bat, but by the time it reaches 2nd base it's roughly the same. And remember- softball is played exclusively with metal bats.

I think this is where we are crossing wires.

You are comparing the two sports.

Everyone else (for the most part) is comparing the two balls.

Good idea. Ms. Veggie seems a bit militant.

BTW........

I am not even going to go into the differences of men vs. women in vegmom's post because I can see that would be a whole 'nother can of worms.

That is why I keep reinterating "everything else being equal"

But she means well.

Because I'm a proud softball mom :diva:.

Besides, the way a fastpitch ball is pitched works to women's physical advantage, since most of the power is coming from the hip rotation and leg drive. Baseball and fastpitch are not the same game, but the level of difficulty is about even.

:banghead:

Do you not understand what I mean when I say "EVERYTHING else being equal"

discalimer: that includes- distances, velocity of a pitched ball, velocity of a hit ball, spin of a hit ball, trajectory, force ect....

Yes, I am thinking along lines of potential for injury.

My daughter tends to be Ms Mother Hen to a couple of the smaller/ younger girls on her team when they've been hit. She tells them your are officially a real softball player the first time you have to ice something.

I believe you just did open up that can of worms. :elaine:

:lmao:

Well I'll back out of the thread.

I was required to take a "women's study" course in college back in the mid-90's and I made the mistake of bring up some facts between physical capabilities of men vs. women.

Lets just say I didn't get a 4.0 that year.

OK yeah a baseball that hits you from 30 ft away will hurt more than a softball from the same distance. What I am saying is that in actual play (because of said differences) the potential for injuries is equal.

A softball comes off the bat SLOWER, and slows down FASTER than a baseball.

They're nowhere near the same. Check this out... The Physics of Baseball

I gotta take issue here. The way a softball is delivered works to ANYONE's advantage because the shoulder is a ball and socket joint not meant to raise most of the arm above shoulder level. So that makes any kind of softball an inherently easier sport to play. Additionally you talk to any baseball pitcher in the world and the hips and legs are their major tools in delivering the ball as well. It is NOT about arm strength. And I, for the life of me, can not envision any aspect of softball(fast or slowpitch) that is as difficult as baseball.

The angle and the picture you get as a batter from the ball being delivered could be argued, this is a point of view.

As a former baseball player current baseball coach, and current Softball player. I will say you both are right. I will tell you first hand that a baseball hurts more but you have less reaction time on a softball field.

Mind you the kid this happened to was under 13 so he was pitching from 46 feet. It is well known that the harder the ball is thrown the faster the ball comes off the bat. I am not sure how hard this kids pitched, but just a thought. I had 3 boys that were 12 last year that could pitch in the mid 70s from 46 feet. That give the batter the reaction time of trying to hit a 105 mph fast ball from 60 feet 6 inches.

I just heard from someone that was a slow pitch softball tournament and 2 teams were talking trash and one guy came up and purposly hit the ball as hard as he could back up the middle and fractured the pitchers scull.

people always hit back up the middle...it's a dick move but it happens...it landed me in the hospital with a fractured leg and a staph infection...

i'll never pitch without shin guards again...
